    Craigslist Gloat....

Details and pictures forthcoming later this evening after I get off work. For now, some of the key elements are $100, Stanley, and Little Giant......

Here are the details of the deal, with pictures. I went to check out some planes that I found advertised on Cragslist for $100. The seller said these, and other advertised tools, were his father's and grandfather's.

After looking over the box of planes and some jawjacking, I was prepared to offer $75 for the planes and asked him what the bottom line was on some tap and die sets. They had been advertised for $50. He offered me the lot for $100. I countered with "I will take me about 10 minutes to run up to the credit union."

This is what I came home with....

Four tap and die sets. The 3 pictured are from the Greenfield Tap and Die Company. There are different brand names (Wells Bros, Greenfield, Little Giant) on the different sets, reflecting buyouts and mergers during the company's history. I found out that the company still exists, but as a subsiderary of another company. They were one of the forerunners in standardizing production/standards and probably the main player until after WW II. (The forth set is newer basic junk, maybe good enough for chasing threads.)

While nice, and maybe even collectible treasures, the main reason I was there was to check out the planes. Most of what was in the box was not of great interest.

A pair of Stanley 5's. One is a later production Maroon painted door stop, the other is a corrugated Type 16 (1933-41) in restorable condition. The 2 block planes are a #103 and an unmarked plane similar to a #9. The kindling consists of a molding/trim plane with a mfg I didn't recognize and a Stanley #27 transition plane.

The Japanning is near 100% so the only thing this plane will get is a good cleaning.

Although it is difficult to date a #2, this one has the second generation frog reciever machining and the earlier, key hole shaped hole in the cap iron that was abandoned in favor of the kidney shape in the early 30's. The iron is a Sweatheart with the 3rd version of the logo which was used from 1923-35.

Compared to my other #2, the sole is a little shorter. The last #2's produced were 1/2 inch longer than the original design. The difference is subtle enough that I am still not sure if one is the longer, more rare version or just a variation in the mold.

What would you take for one of the block planes?

I will have to check to see if I have a 103 but the unmarked one is available for sure. Send me a PM.

The bare metal will get a good cleaning and waxing. The Japanning will stay untouched. The tote will be repaired and sanded down, along with the knob, and recieve a shellac finish.
