NEW YORK (AP)—Herschel Walker is starting a new career in mixed martial arts.

The 47-year-old former NFL running back said Monday that he has signed a multi-fight contract with promoter Strikeforce. Walker will begin a 12-week training camp next month in San Jose, Calif.

The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner already holds a fifth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Surprisingly, MMA fighters are some of the highest educated athletes. They are often college athletes that didn't go "pro" in their preferred sport and end up fighting. Chuck Liddell was an accounting major and wrestler at Cal Poly and went on to be heavyweight champ in MMA. How'd you like to have a CPA that could beat up the entire IRS?

If they are some of the most educated athletes then they would know when your in your late forties you should not be fighting men in their prime. Someone should tell him not to be in the ring. I have never seen any mma fighter hold back, that would be the worst case senerio for credibility, so I dont think this is for publicity. Dancing would be a much easier pay day in my opinion.

When you consider that some of the (formerly) best MMA'ers in the world are out there in their thirties and forties getting their butts kicked mercilessly, this is not an age bracket where any sane individual would want to take up the profession...

Educated does not necessarily equate to smart.

I meant that if the MMa people are so educated they would advise him to stay away from the ring, then again they have the possibilty of big check with a washed up football player so maybe they are pretty intelligent.
It still points to brain damage though.
