    For Want Of A Nail

Well the shop ceiling has been reinsulated. By my guesstimate it took 1500 staples. I went through one box and used a couple hundred out of another. I got to thinking about all the other fastners. So far on the shop I've used probably 2000 staples, 1200 roofing nails, 1700 2" ring shanks, 1000 framing nails, a few hundred 3" ring shanks and some galvanized nails I hammered by hand. There were also a hundred or so spiral nails I hand nailed to fix the siding. Oh yeah, and several hundred crown staples and finish nails.

Not to mention that it would be a great lightning attraction that might serve as a power source (in stormy weather of course).

I will get more pics tomorrow. Haven't posted any in a while because no real dramatic changes.

With that many fasteners it may qualify as a metal structure.

                Man!

Did you misplace a decimal point in your nailing pattern? Like doing 1.2" OC Instead of 12" OC?

Nope. I was actually surprised it was that many. I mean, last year I bought a box of framing nails for my nailer and didn't think I'd ever use them all. Well early on it took maybe two weeks to up the nails on the building. I bought another box and have used almost 25% of it. I bought a box of 2" ring shanks and am using up the last of it on the ceiling and will open a 2nd box to finish.

Fortunately they don't go bad. I've got boxes of odd size staples and nails that are pretty old, but some get used every now and then. Can't use them if you haven't got them.

It's surprising how many fasteners you need to do even simple jobs.

I put up heavy duty shelf standards in the garage and my shop - maybe 11 rails in all. Went through two boxes of expensive high strength self-drilling Spax screws at $9 apiece (approx 70 screws per box).
