    Rubbing Can Be Fun

I had a female friend that did it quite a bit. Here's what she did. Has anyone done this?

I made a brass rubbing of a replica of Robert the Bruce's tombstone at Westminster Abbey in London. When I got back home I had it cropped and mounted and it now hangs in our living room. Very impressive.

There were signs all over the place that said "Watch your valuables." I put my camera fanny pack on the ground and stepped through it in order to make sure no one could take it. They really told the truth, though. I became so absorbed in the process that I when I finally took a break and looked up, 20 people had gathered around me and were watching my progress. I didn't have a clue that they were there.

This is something genealogists might do when visiting their forefather's burial sites. Some of the old stones, especially limestone, are found to be in far worse shape than hoped for. It's not hard to harm some of the old stones, and care must be taken to preserve what's left.

My mom used to make "markers" so rubbings of tombstones has always been "normal" to me.
