Are You Ready For Some Football?

College games started today. NFL kicks off Thursday. The NFL is my sport - I refuse to be a serious fan of a football league that defines its 'champion' by voting for it in a poll. And yes, I know there are other things factored in to the rankings, but there should be a playoff system.

While I agree with you about the play-off, I can't stand pro ball. Bunch of premodonnas as far as I can tell.

As for today, My wife is mad and I'm happy. She''s mad because I've been watching football since noon, non-stop And am still watching LSU and Maryland Games right now (ESPN360). I'm happy as College Football is back and my Tigers looked promising today. Looking forward to a real game on Thursday against Georgia Tech.

Football season is about half over. I don't really count that southern game with a short narrow field and too many downs as football

I'm not going to argue with you over the attitudes of professional athletes. Ther is no doubt that they are bad. But anyone who thinks that NCAA Div I football players aren't just as bad is kidding themselves.

That having been said, real football happens on Sundays in my book. You know, as long as it doesn't get in the way of NASCAR. Nawwww, I'd still rather watch my Seahawks. But it's close. I love me some turning left.

If I'm going to sit in front of a TV on a Sunday, it'll be to watch Formula 1. There was high school football on TV recently. What's next...Pop Warner. Actually that would be more fun to watch than NFL.

When the World Series is over, I'll be ready for more baseball. To me, football just means baseball is about over. It's not that I don't enjoy watching a good football game, but it's just not baseball.

I don't watch pro football much anymore. Too much BS. I have the sports package on DTV and can watch college football forever on a saturday.

That is a common argument I hear, but as was already pointed out, CFB has its share of miscreants.

Besides which, this is a case of a few players getting most of the press. I recall reading about a few studies done that showed that NFL players get into trouble at the about the same rate as the US population. In other words, when considered as a percentage of population just about the same percentage of players get into trouble as the rest of the U.S. population. The difference IIRC was maybe 2 tenths of a point. The authors of the study speculated that was because the players A) are all type-A highly agressive personalities and B) have more money to get into trouble with. There are a lot more players with families like you or I have then there are primma-donnas.

If you are tired of Prima Donnas, check out Jared Allen. The guy is an old-school monster. Had a level three (the worst possible) shoulder sprain in the 1st half of a game, and still got two sacks in the 2nd half! He then missed two days of practice before insisting on coming back. "The medical people cleared him," coach Brad Childress said. "You can't make grade three any worse. Tough guy. Once again, he wasn't going to be denied."

He also tours with the USO in the off season:

Here is a guy who got off to a bad start in the NFL, got busted a couple times for DWI, but then really turned things around both on and off the field.

Plus, you have to admire a guy who is working to bring the Mullet back...

I enjoy watching college football more than pro mostly because the crowds are really into the action. They are more connected to the action and the passion really shows. I usually dont start watching pro ball until the last few games when the playoff picture starts to develop and there is something to play for. With college ball a single game can make or break a season, could be the first or last.
I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.

I just could never get into college football - too much scoring for my taste, but I am old school and like strong defense and there are too many teams spreading out the few really good defensive players.

Jared Allen is great. You stole him from the Chiefs! We want him back! That was a dumb move from a dumb GM. I am glad Carl Peterson is gone from KC. I hope Jared does great.

I would say go Chiefs, but I think an 8-8 season might be a stretch this year.
