I don't know availability anymore, but there was/is a shotgun shell (3" long if I remember correctly) called a Dragon's breath. It turns your shotgun into a three second flame thrower.

      Hornets For Sure

When I used to work with trees, we often came across these nests. We would tie an old rag / tee shirt to the end of a pole saw. Soak it in gas and set on fire. Hold the burning rag under the hole in the bottom. As the hornets come out, their wings get burnt off. They fall to the ground and you can step on the ones that have survived. We only did this so we could climb the tree to work without them attacking us. And believe me, they WILL attack.

Otherwise, wait til winter and have a nice souvenier. It you set the fire, the nest will also be destroyed to a degree.

That's very beautiful, and I've very grateful not to have one at my house.

I have a friend in the Atlanta area that cut one down in the middle of winter some years ago and decided to bring it back home and use if or a science class project. Only problem was that in the mild winter of that area, the hornets/wasps were "hibernating". The warmth of the car in an hours ride did some amazing things! His Science project came alive! He bailed out, closed the door. Went to a nearby service station and bought some truck starting "ether". That and a couple of hours solved the problem!

Be careful being around it during hottest part of the day and during hot weather. They get very aggressive during hot conditions and will attack anyone close without any provocation.

Fill the end with clear silicone or two part epoxy. Actually two part epoxy might be good over the whole thing.

Put it in the freezer for a while. That will kill off the larvae and any other hibernating adults.

Wait until it is cold out and there is no sign of the hornets. Careully cut it from the tree and place it in a big garbage bag with a couple of rags soaked in gasoline. Seal the bag and let it set for a couple of weeks. It should be safe by then. They used to bring $50-$70 around here at antique stores. I'm not sure if there is still a demand for them.

Actually, from what I understand all males die off and female queen usually leaves nest before hibernating for the winter. Most species of wasps abandon the nest and build a new one each year.

But it's a frightening thought that they could warm up in the woodshop and come to life...

                          They have a function

If they are not a threat, leave them alone, because like some other flying insects, they contribute to polination.
However, if they are a threat, wait until dark when they are all returned to the nest. start a good fire going nearby. Go up a ladder and slip a large black plastic trash bag over the nest beginning at the bottom, snap it off the branch, keep bag securly closed and place on top of fire and walk away. This worked for me.
