    Sad Day Today

Had to put my 16 year companion down this AM. Hard to imagine the house without her very vocal Meow's. A bit of a tyrant but still a faithful member of the family. Will be sorely missed. Started to have seizures that just kept up; vet gave her less than a 50-50 chance of ever being OK. And so it goes. She is now buried on a hill where she can see over her domain and the places she loved to roam.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

It's really hard to lose a pet you've had for a long time. Unfortunately, many of us will lose several before our own days are over. I hope you can find comfort soon.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was looking at one of my dogs contemplating a similar day that is approaching sooner than I want it to. He will always be my buddy - his barking and waking me up every morning for a week was how I met my wife.

I can feel your pain L.D. Been throught it a few times myself and every time I'll say "not again", but then I act foolish and find another friend.

One of our German Shepherds (a rescue as a pup) is 11 yrs old and is active as a pup. She has started to get incontinent, but we will pamper her for as long as possible.

It is always sad to loose a pet. Our german shepherd is only 2 1/2, and a while back we watched the movie "Marley and Me", and after the movie my wife asked me how old a GS usually get, and I told her not to expect her to live longer than 12 years at best (my old GS was put to sleep when she was 13), then my wife looked at the dog, hugged her and had tears in her eyes - so imagine how it will be in 10 years time...

This is never easy. Had to say goodbye to two companions last year, so I know all to well how you feel. My thoughts are with you.

Man, it's the toughest job a pet owner has to do, but they depend on us to ease their pain when the time comes. Buck up... When one door closes, another opens. There are so many who need a friend like you.

It took us over a year, but we made it to the pound to be picked by a cat (not a kitten). Whether or not we can survive another loss, will have to be decided later. Until that day, he is our excuse for looking at extended cab trucks and sliding windows in both truck and topper.

The loss of a beloved pet is one of the hardest things to endure. The decision to put them out of their pain is hard to make. You did the right thing and she would thank you for it if she could.

One of out cats, a 15 yr old rescued stray, suffers from a overactive thyroid problem that can't be "fixed".

We watch her grow thinner and thinner every day. We've been feeding her constantly with high fat and protein food (cooked hamburger, canned Tuna and Half and Half.

I think we're just prolonging the eventual, but as long as she still shows no signs of pain or uncomfort, and this has been going on for about a year, I refuse to have her put down.

Its like watching a relative dying in front of you and it hurts. But I guess that as long as she is happy and active, will accrpt God's gift to us.

Sorry to hear about your buddy. We lost our Shop Cat about six weeks ago. She insisted on inspecting the shop for mice at least once a week.

Our cat had hyperthyroidism in her old age, but reacted OK to medication. The tough part was to get the medication into her (it's a cat after all!). Tried quite a few methods, all of which worked only short term. Eventually our vet got us the medication prepared in a form that can be absorbed through the skin. I just had to rub a little dab on the inside of her ear (using gloves of course). Easy, she actually like the attention, and it helped. Still needed to keep switching foods a lot to keep her eating.
