    Pancake Mix Mold Warning

Mold that forms in pancake mix can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction. Read about it here:

Isn't that why there's an expiration date? I'll bet you might get sick if you drank "very expired" milk, too.

This is one of my pet peeves.

All you need is some flour, baking powder, and a little sugar and salt, and you've got your own "pancake mix," albeit without the fancy box. Just add egg and milk and breakfast is just minutes away.

I know this isn't the point of your post, but sometimes I wonder if companies are trying to help people forget just how easy it is to do that they do sometimes. A friend gave me a concerned look once and asked, "You're making them from scratch?!?" as if that would make them so terribly boring or insufficient.

I think people have been trained to think that the stuff in the boxes in the "real thing." I've been trying to de-program for years. (And we should have *NEVER* made that boxed mac & cheese for the kids -- what do that put in that stuff that makes it the only mac & cheese that kids like?!? )

Okay -- I'll get off my high horse now and go make a packet of brownies. There is something to be said for convenience and a winning secret recipe after all...

Rant over. Sorry to disturb your peaceful post. I'll move along now.

I sometimes use the Bisquick 'just add water' pancakes that come in the plastic bottle. Makes just enough for the wife and me.

for larger groups, I make them with boxed Bisquick from their recipe.

On a similar vein- has anyone seen/tried the pancake batter in an aerosol can? Looks like a whipped cream can- don't know if it's new or not- just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago.

At the bottom, it states explicitly the cause - it's not the age per se, but the packaging. Shucks, any food that sits out that long would be just as bad or worse.

My wife is very subject to un-proportionally assigning blame on things like this. Since 99% of the space deals with the dangers and only 1% deals with the cause, she will lump 99% of all packaging as dangerous when in fact only 1% is probably dangerous.

But even then, We double and triple fold open packages when closing, and use spring clips on all opened unused packages. We are quick to throw things out at expiration date or if things don't taste or smell "right" - I mean even a little funny. When one of us has allergies or a cold, we question things regularly.
