    Moving...

We should get our occupancy certificate today. Now come the details of moving from one place to another after 22 years.

I just spent two hours getting phone lines, internet service and TV connected, disconnected and swapped among three different residences. We wanted to keep phone numbers we already have up there and move services around on the phone lines we have here until we sell the house.

The AT&T call center specialist did a great job and waived lots of fees. And then over lunch LOML and I realized I had missed something.

We moved in 2005 after 17 years in the same place. It is amazing how much you accumulate over that period of time. It is really strange having everything you own in a U-haul truck. It makes you realize just how few possesions you really need and that the people in your life are really the only thing that can't be taken away from you.

Good luck with your move, I hope yours works out as well as ours did!!!
I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.

All Right what did you miss? I would hate to think of moving but we are contemplating just that. I will be taking grandson back home to Idaho and will spend a few days looking seriously. $600+ to register our 2 cars is a bit much espediqlly for under $300 I could get 2year registration on both cars and they have better roads and obey traffic laws.
Enjoy you place at Tahoe it is beautiful from after Labor day till Memorial day.

Oh, the humanity! Now you HAVE to make the move you've planned and sweated over for so long, to that godforsaken heckhole, Lake Tahoe!

Here's a small portion of Mark Twain's description in Roughing It:

"The forest about us was dense and cool, the sky above us was cloudless and brilliant with sunshine, the broad lake before us was glassy and clear, or rippled and breezy, or black and storm-tossed, according to Nature's mood; and its circling border of mountain domes, clothed with forests, scarred with landlsides, cloven by canyons and valleys, and helmeted with glittering snow, fitly framed and finished the noble picture. The view was always fascinating, bewitching, entrancing. The eye was never tired of gazing, night or day, in calm or storm; it suffered but one grief, and that was that it could not look always, but must close sometimes in sleep."

And in case you falter in your labors at moving, take this inspiration:

"...Three months of camp life on Lake Tahoe would restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor and give him an appetite like an alligator. I do not mean the oldest and driest mummies, of course, but the fresher ones. The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn't it be? - it is the same the angels breathe."

I forgot about internet service on a phone line at what will become a rental property. Easy fix.

15+ years ago when we first started thinking about where to retire, our first look was at Bend, Oregon. I think I would have been fine with it if I could retire rather than having to work part time as I do now but LOML realized she'd be far away from friends, family and good medical care. We also looked at the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe but neither of us care for South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village was too expensive. The property we eventually bought up there was reasonably priced, near the transportation hubs and a town, and had a good view.

No doubt California is expensive and pretty messed up. So are lots of other places. I would consider moving to any number of place in the West - Grand Junction, Salt Lake City, southern Utah (St. George area), eastern Oregon and Washington, maybe even Montana's banana belt (Flathead Lake), but LOML wants to stay in California so we will.

The biggest problem I can see with moving after 22 years in the same place is getting everything packed that's been squirreled away for 21 years. Nooks and crannies you forgot about are full of stuff you forgot about long ago.

Flathead Lake 'native' here, in my 54 years -- have never heard the Flathead Valley referred to as 'banana belt'.....

Stan, the "banana belt" label was from folks who lived in Butte. IOW, it's all relative.

Some bad news this afternoon. The inspector who came out to do final found several things he wants fixed. One has to do with revegetation, which is typically done at the homeowner's convenience in order to get back a deposit. Another has to do with interpretation of the code for railings and a raised patio. Third has to do with the required size of a stair landing that's going to be a real problem because it would require violating the rules on footprint.

But the last has be really angry because five people missed it. The laundry room is on the middle floor and I asked for a floor drain in case the washer overflowed or a hose broke while we were not around. The drain requires a trap with water in it (P-trap), but since the drain is a safety precaution rather than something we anticipate using, it should usually be dry. Now we're faced with a) plugging the drain, or b) tearing out part of the ceiling in the bath below to install a special device to keep water in the trap. This was missed on plan check, rough inspection, by the plumber, by the architect, and by the builder. I'm calm on the outside and ...well I'd better not say exactly WHAT I'm thinking at the moment. Apparently the building department's concern is that methane from the sewer system will back into the house without a wet trap.

I've dealt with the p-trap issue, put plumbing antifreeze in it every six months, or when it starts stinking, and it'll be fine.

Found this last night, which I'm hoping will be acceptable to the building dept. Neither the builder nor the plumber nor the architect had heard of it before. Google saves the day once again.

Is there a code issue with the trap? The commercial/industrial building I had trap issues with is about 10 years old, code could have easily changed since then.

We passed, so today starts the move. Last night I cleared leftover lumber out of hte shop and started installing shelves to store lumber. Today we mve a bunch of heavy goods from the cabin. In two weeks, we move five tons of stuff from the Bay Area. Then the real work of making the place a home begins

Some photos of the finished product:
