Do you blog? If so, what do you blog and why? I've never really thought myself hubristic enough to blog. I am also not opinionated (well I am but I keep them to myself) to start. However, lately I feel like I've been treating BT3Central as somewhat of my blog. Does anybody else think so? If so, do you mind?

I do, sort of. I write op-ed pieces to some of the publications and web sites in my industry. I occasionally offer a mild opinion (ha!) Around the Coffee Pot. I've thought about setting up something more formal, but then again I'm kinda fully occupied right now and a real blog would just be more work.

The idea of a blog interests me, but the thought of keeping it updated on any sort of regular basis seems too much like assembly-line work. Did enough of that in my younger days.

A blog is short for web log. It is sort of like a dear diary online. Some of the more common ones are political but there are also religious themes, sports writers keep blogs, etc. There are also the private citizens who describe events in their life for anybody who cares to read them. Alex Franke, a member here has one he uses for how-to's on computer programming.

Blogs were how a lot of people in Iran got word out during the elections since the official media was all censored.

Pelligrini, thanks. Even though I've never met most of you, I consider you all friends. The problem is my wife understands neither what it takes to build my shop or do my job. My dad understands both but I can't complain to him all the time. So I vent here instead.

I can't really get into blogging, but I think that forum sites like this are great for sharing tips, ideas, opinions, etc. - or just venting frustrations and sharing life events with people with similar interests.

I think that my "hangup" is that when I see friends/family members with a ton of daily blog (or Facebook, etc.) activity - it just seems like they must spend so much time typing about life that they aren't actually living it (more typing than doing). I suppose that the same thing could happen here, but it seems to me that most of us have a lot of posts related to accomplishing some type of work (ww project, home improvement, etc.).

Just my opinion, I could be totally wrong.

I agree with you Bill. I signed up for facebook awhile back to get some info a manufacturer was putting out on a trade show. Now I am getting friend requests, and writing some pretty mundane stuff just not to be rude. It seems like mindless chatter. That is what e-mail is for!

I just have other things to do than to sit in front of the computer all the time.

Ooops! I am an accountant, and I have to sit in front of a computer all the time!!

Yeah, I guess I do. I don't make them very personal, though, and I don't do it that often.

If there's something I happen to know about, I discover that other people might like to know the same thing, and I have the time available to write it down, then I'll add it to a blog. I've gotten a bunch of "thank you" emails, with comments like, "I've been looking everywhere for this" and even a "you just saved my job." It always makes me feel like I've done a good deed.

I also add stuff that I just want to share with friends, or things I want to remember in the future. Like my latest post on http://www.thefrankes.com/wp/ -- I wanted to share it again with the couple I wrote it for and that was just a convenient place to put it.

I do much more at work, though -- on a private intranet. The blog and the wiki at work are a *great* resource for my team -- including myself -- especially when I encounter a problem I know I've solved before, but just don't remember exactly how. It makes for great business and technical documentation.

My public software-related stuff that crokett mentioned goes to http://www.codecreations.com/site/blog, and all the other random stuff goes on the other blog, which I'm back-filling with older content as time permits.

As far as facebook is concerned, I like that it keeps you "in the know" with your circle of friends -- especially those you don't talk to that often. You pick up little bits and pieces of information, and you actually connect more either through comments or in person.

I blog about people who blog.

I actually keep a small family blog when I deploy or when I was stationed overseas so I can keep my entire family up to date at the same time.
