    Screenshot Question

There was a mention in a thread about doing screenshots with Vista. How can a screenshot be captured with XP, and used as an attachment to a post, or saved to a hosting site? TIA.

simplest way to capture a screen is to press the buttons <<shift>> + <<print-screen>> (this should be on the top, right side of your keyboard).

But it only copies to the clipboard (or memory) so you need a place to paste it or save it - with most sites (like this), you cannot paste an image but have to attach file.

For that, you could open some graphic program like paint.exe (within Accessories on XP) and paste into it and save as a JPG. MS Word would work too, but large in file size.

That what I do in XP, but I just hit the Print Screen button and the clipboard will contain the screenshot. I've never used shift though.

There are some other apps that will do all that for you too. Sangit comes to mind.

Alt+Printscreen will save an image of the active window to the clipboard.

You can paste it into a graphics program. I like Irfanview http://www.irfanview.net/

Press [Print Scrn] and then click on "Start," then "Run," then type "mspaint" and click on "Ok."

Now with MS Paint running, click on "Edit," then "Paste." Now "File," then "Save," give it a name, and then tell it to save as a JPEG in the drop-down.

If you want, when you're in MS Paint you can crop the screen to only show the stuff you want (use that little rectangle that says "Select" when you hold your mouse pointer over it). Then click on "Edit," "Copy" to copy that to the clipboard. Now click on "File," "New," and then "Edit," and "Paste" to create a copy that has the newly cropped data. Now just save that as a JPG.

If you've got several windows open ALT+ PrintScrn give a lot less cluttered snapshot since it copies ONLY the active window, not the whole screen.

And another vote for Irfanview. One of the greatest pieces of freeware available.

Cool, I didn't know about the ALT-print screen. I always cropped my double monitor screenshot in photoshop.

I frequently have to take screenshots and notate them.
I found http://www.jingproject.com/, it is freeware, I have never recieved an ad from them, it is basic and very functional.
