I was checking my Sprint bill and found a $9.99 charge for Zong: Alerts - SMS MICROPAY on the wife's phone.
I called Sprint and they said this is becoming more common. Customers get a text message and by clicking on it are subscribed to one of Zong's services. The company is tied into several web services including Facebook, video news alerts, and several others. Basically looks to me like a clearing house for cell communication ads and services.
To be sure it wasn't something she wanted, I had her call Sprint. They removed the charge and blocked any further charges from this company. Within 5 minutes she got 3 messages. The first 2 from Zong and the third from 'Big Brother'. She had called in on one of the viewer votes/polls after one of their periods of wasted air space.
Although technically legitimate, to me this is still a scam.
