Don Garlits - no plans for slowing down

A friend sent this to me.

Knowing there are a few gear heads around here, I thought I should share

Racing legend Don Garlits has no plans for slowing down

An accountant? Who would of thunk it!!

I remember him in the late 50's and early 60's, and was something to watch. His statement in the article..."If anything, racing has kept me young," he said. "I've loved every minute of it.", should have been "every second".

BD is the man... He's forgot more about racing than most people will ever know. Sat next to me on a flight from Orlando to LA a few years ago, and he told stories nonstop the whole trip. What a treat that was, and what a character and gentleman he is. We will not see his equal again... ever. Hope he's around another 78 years.

Russ, thanks for posting that article. Big Daddy took up a large part of my bedroom walls when I was growing up with pics and posters. He has been and will always be a favorite.

BD used to live in Seffner (near Brandon/Tampa) when I was a kid, before he moved to Ocala. He had wild cars out on his property when he'd be working on stuff. I never realized how big he was until years later. I'm stunned he's almost 80.

I had the privelege of working for him in 1973 at his speed shop on Dale Mabry Hwy in Tampa as a counter salesman. I was into cars/bikes/etc. His longtime engine builder John Zorian helped me build a 351 Cleveland engine to stuff into a 66 mustang fastback I had purchased. Used to run at a dragstrip in Oldsmar called Twincitys Dragstrip back then and qualified in the 74 GatorNationals in D/MP class with it. He was a great guy back then. In 1988 I was a parts manager for a bike dealership here in Atl. and we set up shows at the World Congress center to sell bikes and jetskis. Don had a display with 1 of his old dragsters about 50 ft from where our gig was and we rehashed some old times at his shop on Dale Mabty, Great guy, salt of the earth type. Glad to see he,s still runnin
