    After Surgery Pics

Well to say the least I do not like the results. I,m afraid I,m going to be hobbled for the rest of my life. I can push in maybe a 64th on either side of the ankle before I hit bone. Guess we will see what rehab does otherwise I,m thinking cut it off and add a prosthetic foot. What do you guys think.

I've got a ton of steel in my left ankle and foot, and yes, it's a bit bigger than my right. But I have never encountered anything I can't do just as well with it as I can do with my right. I bike, I run, I dance, and I do martial arts. Going on 15 years now, and no problems whatsoever... I think you need to give it a chance. You'll be OK.

It is full of extra fluids because it has been immobilized for months. Do the physical therapy and you'll be amazed at how quickly it improves.

Well, a wooden leg would give you the reason to take up turning. You could make your own peg legs

Not only NO, but H--L NO!

              See attached photo.

After I broke my ankle (in seven places), I was in some kind of a cast, crutches, walker, you name it, for about 13 months. We tried pins and screws (about eight) and an ankle fusion. Then it took several months for the swelling to go down.

At first I was OK without a brace, but after about three years, the option was a prosthetic or the brace shown in the photo -- with no guarantees that the brace would work or be any less bothersome than a prosthetic. I opted for the brace and am still using the same one 12 years after the initial accident.

True, there will be no running, no X-Country Skiing, no fly-fishing from Alaskan (or any) streams unless from a boat, and walks of any length -- a mile or more, will be problematic. There will be days when not even the brace will seem OK, but the good days far outnumber the bad ones and in the long run it will be worth it. There will be days when it is truly a royal PIA.

The biggest problem I now have is finding shoes where the same size fits both feet, the left shoe having to fit over the brace.

Its probably true that prosthetic devices are hundreds of times better than they were a decade ago, but getting one should be "Plan B".

Good luck and all the best, Steve

i hope you get well soon. i wouldnt even think of cutting it off.

like steve said "but the good days far outnumber the bad ones and in the long run it will be worth it." i am not speaking from personal experience but i know of a couple who have tons of steel in their legs and feet, but they are really happy now that they didnt get it cut off.

so hang in there, its going to take some time, but stick it out. stay on top of your physio therapthy and you will come out of it fine!

                good luck,

Hey Gang, Thanks for all the input, but thats not swelling where my ankle joint is supposed to be. That,s the joint itself after 9 mo,s of healing all they removed was the stabilization device. I,m considering the Scandinavian total ankle replacement that was approved by the FDA this past May or STAR as they refer to it as but its $9500 for the joint itself not including surgery. The thing you guys probably do not know is this was not my fault. I,m having to sue to get all my medical and other expenses taken care of. The jerk that did this to me refuses to turn it in on his homeowners ins because he does not want his rates to go up. The cost so far and I have not gotten the latest bill are already $97,000 + dollars. I know get a good attorney. They all want 30% of whatever we get and my livelihood depended on my ability to walk as I had a small landscape and lawncare biz. All my life I worked on my feet not my gluteus maximas, Hey I said ass and got away with it.

My Landlord and friend of 16 yrs climbed ito a silver maple tree intoxicated with a running chainsaw on a ladder and got it pinched in the rather large limb he was trying to remove because it was rubbing against his house 49 ft away. I had a extendable gasoline powered pole pruner and started at the house on an extension ladder and began pruning it away in sections. During the course of removing the limb the pressure used with the extension began to pull away from the clutch mechanism on the base motor unit and would not turn the 10 inch chainsaw blade mounted on the end. I had progressively worked my way down the tree limb and had used a safety strap to tie the ladder off to the limb in case the sections I were removing should hit the ladder. I had the extension ladder about 4 rungs past the limb and attached with a cinch style tiedown/cargo strap. I left for lunch and went to get another base motor unit at my home and when I returned all the debris from the aforementioned tree prunings had been hauled off to the woods behind his home. Other than that everything looked as I has left it. I realized I needed to move the ladder over again to make the next section of cuts and when I hit the release button to unstrap the ladder where it was attached to the tree it collapsed. He has apparently bumped the base of the ladder out a half foot or so disengaging the clamps which hold the upper part of the extension ladder in place. My foot got hung in the ladder on the way down, however I was able to grab the tree limb but not completely around with my arms. I managed to get my foot released from the ladder but fell while trying to swing my legs up over the tree limb. My ankle put a 2 inch dent in the main rails of the ladder and shattered it into 7 pieces. He was drunk when I got there at 9:30 in the morning and I had repeatedly told him to get away from where I was working. I asked him to call 911 because I wanted a cop there to see his condition and take an accident report. He and his wife called an ambulance instead. When they came his wife finally came out cocktail in hand as they were loading me onto the guerney. She proclaimed " The chainsaws still in the tree", I could have smacked her up side the head, even the EMT,s just rolled their eyes. Fortunately they put in their reports they could smell alcohol on both their breaths as well as telling me they had homeowners ins not to worry about anything in front of the EMT,s. Now as it turns out they do not own the home. Its their fathers and he claims I was an independent contractor and required to have ins. My Lawyer says no contract, no verbal agreement other than My Friend/Landlord had said he would knock something off the rent. He is 64 yrs old and has just gotten his 2nd D.U.I. in 3 yrs, I feel sorry for them being in that sad condition with the alcoholism but if he had done as asked I would be walking normally. The poor FIL is gonna get the short end of the stick at first but I,m sure his ins co. will sue the SIL to recoup their losses.

Most homeowners policy cover you in case of an accident on your property. My lawyer has already said we have a very strong case but it will be yrs before I see a dime unfortunately. I,m not the type to go sue someone so please do not get me wrong, but this was clearly not my fault and the liability lies with the homeowners ins co.
