Last September I had a heart attach while in Nanaimo, B.C. Contrary to the reports you will hear on the Fox News Network (aka NNN), health care in Canada serves very well, at least for me. I survived, even though I was not part of the health system and my insurance eventually paid less for my hospitalization than I would have paid in the US.
Remember, of course, that should we invade and annex Canada making the provinces states, Republicans would never again win an election.

I think it addresses the issues very well. In a nutshell, for 99% of the population in Canada, it's a good system that takes care of them for much less money than in the US. By contrast, in the US you can get just about anything you need when you want it for a price. I found it ironic the lady got the care she wanted in the US but bankrupted herself in the process.Jeff

Is there no way to pay for medical care outside of the public system in Canada? That woman's story was very compelling, but if she was able to pay for care in the USA shouldn't she also have been able to pay for care in Canada.
I don't know how the system works in Canada so, although my question might seem simple, anyone who knows the details please answer.

I have never practiced in Canada, but as Wikipedia article points out most medical care is private though paid for by the government. It sounds like one could spend out of pocket to get necessary care, but I suspect the problem is availability, not that it's actually prohibited.

I might point out that for the most part we in the U.S. have broad availability of services as long as you have insurance or means to pay. (I see examples on virtually a daily basis where lack of funds is an impediment to getting needed care.) That's rationing by anyone's definition.Jeff
