Not off the road, but within the lane(s) sure for 'coon and larger animals.

My one crash happened when I was 16, coming home from work at 1AM (bar close time back then), and swerved to avoid hitting a drunk who pulled out of a parking lot and headed the wrong way down the road toward me...

A couple years ago we sat unmoving on a highway in Wyoming for over 2 hours. The cause was two loaded logging trucks. One had swerved to miss a pronghorn and caused a head-on with the other truck. Nobody was walking away from that crash. The logs from the two trucks were no more than a foot or two apart in the middle where the cabs should have been...

I always try to swerve, I hate killing animals. Now with people, well that's a much different story. BTW, I carry a 10 million umbrella policy, so I really don't give a hoot about a lawsuit.

I'd brake, but I wouldn't swerve. Being that I'm used to driving larger vehicles (4x4 pickups) my driving habits are all for those large, high center of gravity, vehicles. So swerving doesn't exactly work into maintaining control of most vehicles, and keeping 4 wheels on pavement for trucks and SUVs. I'll move a little in the lane (or into another if its clear) but I'm not gonna jerk the wheel around once at 40 MPH.
