I stayed out of it as long as I could...But yesterday my wife advised me otherwise....
My sisters '97 ford escort has broken down...again. She bought it about 7 years ago used, and had problems within 2 weeks of driving it off the lot. It's on it's second engine and tranny since she bought it.
Now its at my dad's - He tells me that one piston wasn't firing and the #3 sparkplug was disintegrated. Okay let's pull the head and see if anything can be done
... Bear in mind that this is a rebuilt engine about 18mo old.
I pulled the the external items and found blow by in both the #2 and #3 intake manifold ports. The #1 stud on the exhaust manifold fell away when I put a socket on it. There was blow by on #1 and #3 exhaust manifold ports. So I start cracking the head bolts and most come out pretty easily though heavily rusted. Three bolts gave some problems. One looked like the had used a sealant when they installed it and I had to thread it all the way out. Two snapped - they were dry but rusty.
So here's the question - from the look of the snapped bolts the broke inside the unthreaded area (about 1" up from the block inside the head). If we can get the head off it should be no problem removing them. The problem is the head won't budge. It's either being locked in place by the two broken bolts or it's been sealed to the block (epoxy???).
Is there a way to drill out the bolts without chewing up the head? The break point is about 4" from the top the head in about a 3/8" hole. I can get an extra long bit and maybe a sleeve to protect the head, but there's no way to get an extractor down there. Any ideas would be appreciated.
