Magic Jack And Faxing

My SIL has the Magic Jack, and he needs to be able to receive multiple faxes. LOML sent him 3 pages from her PC, and I sent him 3 pages from a phone/fax combo. He didn't receive the 3rd page either time. For you Magic Jack owners, is there a problem he can solve? He is considering canceling his regular phone service if the thing will work. Faxing is a big part of his work. TIA

Thanks for the help. From the PC he didn't receive any of the 3rd page. From the combo, he actually only received 1 out of 3. The problem is that his business is home appraisals, and he needs to be able to get what's sent.

I thought with all the IT guys here someone may have run across this problem, and if it's indicative of Magic Jack, he won't cancel his phone service, and return the unit within the 30 day period. I suggested to him to call Magic Jack and talk to someone in tech support.

I don't use it but a quick google turned up a lot of people with your question... Below is a C&P from a FAQ it is the only real advise that I saw - Most just say it's hit and miss and highly dependant upon the quality/speed of your ISP connection.

Can I fax using Magic Jack?
This is a popular question. They do not support faxes, but the answer is yes. You may need to do some tweaking. However, not much tweaking. First, turn off error correction on your fax machine or program. Then, set the fax machine or program to use the slowest speed available. The slowest speed will ensure a fax goes through. You may increase later to find the highest speed at which a fax can be received.

Cabman, I was considering Magic Jack until I talked to a guy on my team at work. He has it and says it is not reliable enough for full-time home phone service. He is the type that investigates everything fully so I have no reason to doubt him. If I were your SIL I would not attempt to use Magic Jack as my sole phone for business. That said, I suggest to your SIL that he try Magic Jack for at least a month, preferably two before making the switch if he chooses to do so.

I have a friend who uses it. He told me flat-out that it had a long way to go before it would replace a phone line. But he uses it for long distance, when he can get it to work.

I sure wouldn't be taking chances with a few bucks if I were needing a business line.

Sounds like a bandwith, or amount of data transmission problem. I don't know how the device works, but she might try isolating the connection by removing any other device on the line if applicable.

My wife was wanting me to take a look at Magic Jack. I declined. I'm not even going to pay for anything for a product whose company will air commercials like I have seen. Ugh, I can just hear the pitch in my head now.

I have a Magic Jack and I use it all the time but NOT for faxing because I never was able to get it to work reliably. I would say why risk it? I use the magic Jack because I make a lot of calls to Canada and for 20 bucks a year it cannot be beat. I use it on my network connection for AT & T uverse and I believe I have the 3 megabit network. I have found that if my 4 television streams are being used the sound quality is less than stellar but if 3 or less streams are running the sound is crystal clear.

I agree that it has a lot to do with the quality of your internet. Also, Magic jack does not work unless the computer is on and they have a flaky way of handling 911 service so it will not be a replacement for the regular phone line in my house.
