        2nd and 3rd try? I'm obviously doing something wrong...

        Seriously, what's the strategy here? Both you and he can only move one square at a time, and he has the advantage of going in the opposite direction of your first move...

          Finally won one -- basically got lucky with the starting green dots. But still baffled how it's winnable in general...

            It mostly depends on the starting dots. I don't think it could be won with just an open field.

              Start far away from the cat and steer him towards an existing green square. If he goes in an opposite direction, your 2nd move is far away from him again.
