Verizon FiOS / email question

(I think I remember that some of you have FiOS TV.)

Any chance that FiOS TV subscribers can receive/send emails using a TV-only interface? ...I'm hoping for an easier way to send photos to my father. He has FiOS TV, but no computer. It seems like all the pieces are there for something like this to work nicely, but I don't know if the demand is there to make it happen.

Wasn't there a similar idea a while back? Web TV or something. I don't think it went over really well. It might go over better with the HD TVs out now.

I wish they'd run fiber through my neighborhood.

It's not from Verizon/Fios but what was WebTV is now MSNTV a quick search will take you to the web site which has demos and pricing.

I haven't heard about any service provided by Verizon that allows this type of functionality.

There is a feature that they have for their DVR, but it doesn't seem to use a webapp, it seems to need an application on a local PC (i.e. on the LAN).

How about a digital picture frame, and a handful of SD cards sent back and forth through snail-mail?

I've also seen cheap "set top box" type devices that just display photos from an SD card... seemed pretty useless to me, but in this context, they seem to make sense.

My in-laws had MSNTV before we gave them a laptop. Despite the growing pains my FIL is happier with the laptop. I hated MSN TV but then when he had it it was dialup. There is a version for broadband, but if you are paying for broadband you might as well get the computer.

Yeah, we had that for my mother. She still had to have somebody bring up email and pics for her. Do NOT go this route.

I have Verizon tripple-play, which includes Verizon FIOS cable to my house terminating in their box on the side of my house. After the box I have a regular coaxial cable going to cable router for my Internet service, another coaxial cable going to each settop box I have with my TVs and I have a regular copper wire for telephones. Inside the house I effectively have 3 separate services that don't cross into each other's territory. All 3 services come together in Verizon box and go to Verizon over single fiber cable, but inside the house I still need separately TV, computer and telephone. I am not aware of Internet services like e-mail delivered over your TV. Also, I don't think TV remote is a convinient tool to type e-mail text.

We send him DVDs now - fortunately most DVD players now will let you browse photos on the media. But everyone once in a while it would be a lot easier to shoot off an email (e.g. to send a PDF or article I find online) rather than using snail mail...
