    Old, Fat, and Crooked

By now the news is out about my high school reunion. All in all it was pretty interesting and depressing to see a bunch of old fat and bent over dudes.

There he was, our high school football star, with a huge pot belly and couldn't stand up straight. Most of the women there I wouldn't have recognized in a line at the grocery store.

I know what you mean--got my 30th coming up soon, and I know I'll be surrounded by people getting old!

It is surprising how some people change--star athletes become fat and bald, wimpy guys get fit as they get older, hairy people go bald, etc. I still have all my hair, have a few gray hairs in my beard but not on my head, and only weigh a bit more than I did in HS.

What was interesting last time was how within 30 mins. or so with these weird old people all of a sudden it was like it was 25 years earlier, as if none of us had changed at all, at least not for the worst.

Funny how voices change less than other physical-related attributes. I think that's a big part of the reason that, within a few minutes, you're transported back over the years in speaking with an old friend.

The only one I made was my fourtieth (and the only one I will make). Seems the gals circulated and to catch up a little with everyone but the guys, mainly the jocks, migrated into the same little clicks that they had in the 60's. The exception was, like in C-Man's case, the military men seemed to get together.

I got some bit of pleasure seeing what the years had done to some of the star athletes and knowing I am in better shape than most of them now.

My 20th (gad did I say that!) will be coming up in a couple years. I don't plan to go. Didn't go to the 10th either. When I graduated high school there weren't that many of my class mates I really wanted to see again, and that hasn't changed much over the years.

If my math skills are correct next year will be my 40th. And it is a big who gives a ...... If I had wanted to hang around with those folks I would have stayed in touch. Mom who still lives in the hometown is a font of local gossip so i still get some news, whether I want it or not. And at this point most of those people attending no longer try to impress every one, they just compare medical issues..

I had a graduating class of 94 people, and I think most of them received a diploma. Along with the way all of the people change, we have lost a very high percentage out of our class, 3 of the 5 guys I hung out with are gone. Mostly from living to fast and complications from that.

And of course there is this perspective

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40 years ago.

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my classmate.

After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high school. "Yes," he replied.

"When did you graduate?" I asked.

              He answered, "In 1957."

"Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"
