Hockey, anyone?

Any hockey fans around here? We used to be pretty heavily into watching hockey on TV during the 1960s, but for some reason they quit broadcasting it. When they started airing it again, for some reason we just never got back into watching it.

With the playoffs being aired, I decided to watch a game with the Black Hawks and Vancouver. Wow! What a game!! Although I don't really know the players anymore, it wouldn't take much for me to really get stuck on it again.

I'm in LA (that's Lower Alabama for short), and we're into two sports...SEC Football and NASCAR.

Seriously, I've watched a little hockey, but I just don't understand it. Maybe if I ever learned some of the rules and/or went to a game, I might enjoy it more. I've had several college friends that love it...I just never got into it.

Hockey is the best sport ever. This comes from a guy who played basketball and baseball growing up. I really got into the game when I was in college. I ended up playing intramurels. It was a best workout I ever had. Separately, the task of skating and moving a puck are easy. When you combine them is when it gets fun. Plus, the hitting isn't bad either. I've played off and on since college in various leagues. The only downside is the cost. Most clubs charge each player $250 - $400 per season, which is about 10-15 games. Gets expensive, but still great.

I have been having a tough time watching hockey since there was about 17 seconds left in the NCAA Frozen Four championship game this year. Was a great game up to that point.

I watched a little of the Columbus Blue Jackets play off games.

Just going to take a while to get over the NCAA championship loss.

By the way, watching hockey in high def is the best!!!!

Big Vancouver Canucks fan here so if that was game 6 it was exciting but also dissapointing. The Black Hawks are a young team that's really upped their game for the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win the cup and I'll be cheering for them for as far as they go.

I find it hard these days to watch NHL hockey but I love going to Bulldogs games( farm team for the Hab's). The best hockey has always been the world juniors.

Yes, it was game 6. But I didn't find it dissapointing. It really was a great game that held excitement right up to the last minute.

I have season tickets for the local ECHL team. They are the rejects eeer prospects for the NHL.

Growing up I never liked hockey much because it was not televised. Then in my late teens they got a local TV contract and I got hooked. There were some lean years when my team was known as the Dead Things. All has been forgiven since 97/98. With that said Go Wings.

Big fan in the late 60's .. early 70's for the Atlanta Flame (now Calgary Flames).. big fan of the Atlanta Knights (International League) until the Atlanta Thrashers were franchised and they left town for Canada. Haven't been to a Thrashers game yet as the Big Fan turned to just a fan. I do go to some local Gwinnett Gladiator games which is ECHL or AHL (?) I believe and played at Gwinnett Arena about 9 miles away. Can't afford the NHL tickets but the bush league games are very reasonable.

Sarge Back when I lived down in Cincinnati, I would go to a few games of whichever hockey team was there at the time. They may not last long, but there always seems to be one. Cincinnati Cyclones are defending ECHL Kelly Cup champions. As for Miami University (Oxford, Ohio)hockey then , always inexpensive, easy to get tickets, and great crowds of 2500 folks at the Goggin Arena( plus the opportunity to get a sandwich from the Bagel & Deli shoppe before the game). Took my son when he was about four to his first hockey game there. Should have seen the kids eye when we ere standing by the tunnel as the players entered onto the ice. Those 5'10" players are huge with skates ans pads on. And how to you explain the penalty box to a 4 year old? - Time out box, naturally.

Miami hockey now, can you believe you have to be a student, or a season ticket holder to get tickets!

Shep it is interesting that you were probably crawling around your parents place in diapers when I was wandering around that campus ( and maybe crawling around a bar or two...)

I think it's fun to watch, but I don't really follow it too closely. I'm afraid that if I get into any sports too early in the season, I'll get too into it and waste too much time.

Gotta catch the 'canes tonight though...

I do believe that Cincinatti was in the International League the same time the Atlanta Knights were. And if I remember correctly they had a very small framed goal-tender by the name of Pokey something. He was very tiny for a goal-tender but probably the quickest from side to side in the cage I have ever seen. What his body didn't cover his lightening speed did and he was one of the best goalie's in the league.

Funny about a very hot climate city as Miami and can't get a ticket for an ice sport. Atlanta and Miami have the two largest Ski (snow) Clubs in the country. They will both put on member-ship drives when one gets ahead of the other in members to gain the lead again. My second wife was in the nucleus of the original Atlanta Ski club so I don't have current info but in the late 80's both clubs had over 6000 members. And of course a number were singles as it was a great place to find a date with something in common.
