How Sammy Got His Groove Back (AKA: The Shop Is Humming Once More!)

    The Announcement

I am happy to announce that a great big woodworking bug has once again bit me. I am officially back in the saddle again. It has been 2 or 3 years since my last project. I just completed a project and I am gung-ho to keep it up. I had a blast in the shop and the feeling of satisfaction of a job completed was icing on the cake.

    The Project

As most of you know, my involvement in Scouting with my sons is one of the reasons I had to set aside woodworking for a while. I am now and Assistant Scoutmaster for my sons' troop. As we were preparing for our first Eagle Court of Honor since my joining the troop, I was appaled at what the Troop has used in the past as the "centerpiece" of the Eagle Ceremony:

The "Candle Board" holds 3 candles at the top that represent the 3 parts of the Scout Oath. Additionally, there are 6 candles on either side for a total of 12 to represent the 12 points of the Scout Law.

In my opinion, the Eagle Court of Honor is one of the most important ceremonies of a young man's life, on the order of a graduation ceremony, etc. To me, it was an insult to our Scouts to use a two 2x2's nailed to a 2x4 as the centerpiece for the ceremony.

My mind starting working overtime to come up with a suitable replacement. After many hours in Google Sketchup, I arrived at the design that swam in my head:

(I will post better photos once the battery for my camera charges!)

Currently it holds a flag that is a spare that belongs to the troop. It will one day hold a special flag that I ordered. I have requested that a flag be flown over the US Capitol on February 8th, 2010, which is the 100th anniversary of Scouting in America.

    The Future

With my newfound "woodworking mojo", I have agreed to make the Craftsman Style bed that Adele has always dreamed of. More info to come real soon, but now I must fire up Cutlist and figure out what to look for when I go lumber shopping this weekend. Hopefully I'll have another gloat to post...

Welcome back, Sam. That's quite a worthy project to get you back in the swim of things. Nice work! There's no turning back now.

Does this mean we should be expecting some more posts along the lines of "Ive forgotten how to do X" or "how do I turn on my BT?"

Very well done. That's a great looking piece. That flag idea is an inspired idea.

I know exactly how you feel. My son just finished his Tiger Cub badge, and I would love to replace some of the ceremony pieces. I think I'll wait until I am less of a newbie before I start making those suggestions, though.

Amen+ on what you said on the Eagle ceremony.

            Great job!

I didn't get into scouting when I was growing up. Now every time I see a project that is related to scouting (especially Eagle) I feel like I really missed something.

Nice job for a great cause. I only made it to Star as my dad died when I was 12 and I had to take a job... I did serve on the N.E. Georgia Administrative Council a few years after returning from Vietnam. I can't say enough about scouting and my Scoutmaster.

He became a Scoutmaster in 1956 and is still the Scoutmaster of Troop 54 in Lawrenceville, Ga. to this day. He says he will continue to be until he gets the final curtain call. Great man.. great organization...

Keep up the good work and deeds...

Welcome back to the fold, Sam! Beautiful ceremonial stand. The idea for the permanent flag is great.

All the comments of the importance of attaining the Eagle rank is right. My son still gets raised eyebrows from prospective employers when they see that on his resume. As his Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and father the emotions I felt when he received his Eagle badge can't be desrcibed.

The only time it was eclipsed was when I stood on the parade deck at MCRD San Diego, in Dress Blues, and saluted that same young man as a new Marine .

What's the next project? A rolltop desk or maybe a serpentine front dropleaf secretary?

                      Great project!

I can sympathize--it's been over a year since I did a project of any size, other than turning a few pens and bottle stoppers. Oh, and I made a guitar from a kit.

I've been busy with other hobbies--guitars, biking, and a new girlfriend...

One of these days the need will arise for a mission-style coffee table or somesuch, and I'll get back inthe groove too!

                        Welcome back

Glad to see you back. I have been absent from my shop too. I finished my office in June, I made a couple of cellphone charging stations in December, and have two more cut out that I haven't touched since then.

I attended one cub scout meeting, then the new troup didn't come together so I never got into scouting either. I would have enjoyed it. I have a Nephew that is an Eagle.
