    A Computer That Plays Jeopardy

    On the face of it it doesn't seem that difficult, until you remember how some Jeopardy questions are asked.

    It's harder than it looks. For one thing, the computer has to understand natural language. For another, although Watson's developers can program in a large number of answers, it still has to come up with fast, clever algorithms for searching them.

    IBM is doing this for a couple of reasons. First, they'll use the results in some very practical, very profitable way. Second, win or lose it will be great publicity, just like the chess-playing exercise a few years ago.
