    Newcomputer

Picked up a new computer this morning. It has a 250gb hard drive and XP already installed. I would like to partition it so I can install Ubuntu on the "D" drive after partitioning. Will Ubuntu partition if for me or do I have to buy software to do it?

    Thanks

Yes, Ubuntu should do the partition for you. However, if your a saver of things like photos, MP3's and PDF's that hard drive may fill up fast. Assuming that it's a desk top computer you may wish to pick up another drive, they are cheap, for the Ubuntu. It will still dual boot.

Ubuntu will partition it for you and resize the partitions as part of the install. If you want to partition it beforehand you can download a bootable CD image for a partition editor/resizer called gParted. It is a very useful utility to have in any case.

Thanks for your reply. I will consider a second drive for Ubuntu. Might even try an external HD. Still need to get a cable (can't remember the name) so I can transfer file from the old to new. Serial Cable will go by Fry's tomorrow and pick one up. The old computer will probably end up being used for the grand kids when they are here.

Does the old computer have a network port? Do you have a hub/switch/NAT box (something like a Linksys "firewall")? If so, then you only need another network cable for the new computer. If no hub, you can use a crossover cable between them. (as compared to the harder to find, serial, null modem cable, nowdays)

How large of drive in the old pc? Is it going to have network connections, for the grandkids? Do you have games already installed, or do you need to clean it off and rebuild it for them? My thoughts are do a clean install/restore of it, and install Linux on it. When you have an issue, you go over to the other pc, and look it up, instead of rebooting. A lot of people do run Linux from memory cards now (SDHC), so something like 10 gb, is a good start to play around with. You can add another drive later.

Tom, Fry's was advertising 1,500 GB (that's 1.5 TB) drives in our paper for $99. That's enough room for Ubuntu, Debian, Redhat and Windows with room to spare.

I saw the add. I could put all the files of every computer in my whole family on that drive

                Transfering file

I am not transfer file using the wizzard and a serial cable. I am just transfering the My Documents Folder and the My Picture Folder and it been going on now for over 4 hours. The old computer is and has been very slow recently and both the forlder have a lot of flile in them. No transfer anything else as this way I can have a fairly clean Hard Drive. I will reinstall the software I want and need as I go along. The old computer has be up for the past 5years and has a lot of Junk in it. I will reformat the HD when I get done and reinstall windows and the Grandkids software and see what happens. I will probably add a second HD to the new computer for Ubuntu. I will take the printer that LOML is using and put that with the Grandkids computer and set her up to use the HP Photosmat All In One, in my den. That way she can print her own pictures off her computer. All we will share in the Printer. and the Internet connection.

                  Update

Canceled the file transfer last night at 10:30pm, after 8 hours. I said it had 216:15:37 to go. I figured somthing isn't right as it shouldn't take almost 2 weeks to transfer file even over a Serial Cable. Will look into the other ways to do even using some CD's
