    Well, I did it..... I even got a permit ($50) so I could have the town take the old one ($10). I took me about 2 1/2 hours to remove the old one and put in the new one. I used 3/4 steel braided water heater supply lines which simplified the installation. Luckily, the gas line matched up and I didn't have to alter the gas line. I surprised myself.... no leaks. Now lets hope I pass inspection.

    thanks for all of the input. It was easier than I thought it would be.

      Around here we have to use flex connections for water and gas along with strapping it to the wall to meet code. It makes changing them easy.
