So we all should be familiar with the Michael Vick saga by now and how much outrage that generated. Now another NFL player, Dante Stallworth was arrested on a DUI manslaughter charge for hitting and killing a pedestrian. with his car. On the face of it, this is far more serious (a person dying instead of animals) but where is the outrage? Why isn't there any?

In my mind, because Stallworth's deed seems more like a momentary lapse of judgement while Vick's was part of a lifestyle that went on over a long period of time. Also because Vick was the face of the franchise and thus subject to more attention... if it has been some 2nd string cornerback 5th round draft pick nabbed for dogfighting, probably wouldn't have been all over the papers.
For that matter, why is everyone always picking on Terrell Owens- who as far as we can tell leads a clean life off the field and on the field pretty much works his butt off- but not the many players who have domestic violence offences or worse? Is being a ball-hungry prima-donna worse than a wife beater? Apparently so. -
It could also be that many people can see themselves in a situation when they're DUI, but the thought of dog fighting is not so common. DUI ruins a lot of people's lives, but we seem to just live with it.

Forty-odd thousand people die each year in auto accidents yet they typically only make the local news as an incidental item rather than a headline. When an airplane slides off a runway with no injuries, it makes headlines for days.
In the first case, auto accidents aren't newsworthy because they've become routine. In the second case, an air accident is very newsworthy precisely because it is so unusual.Comment
