Ok geeks a little help please. I bought a ASUS 1000HD Eee Netbook (not notebook) computer in January. It has Xp on one part of partitioned 120 GB HD. Under XP the printer and wirless internect connection works perfectly.

Getting tired of XP and IE on my desktop computer and wanting to change Operating Systems when I build a new one in a couple of month I installed Ubuntu on the "D" partition on the netbook. I can use the printer HPC6380 by using a USB cable and get on the net by using a LAN cable. If I use a USB Wirless Internet Adaptor it can find the Wireless network but can get on even after using the Wirless network key. I am going through the AT&T Uverse Residental Gateway which containes the Telphone (VOIP) the TV system and the Internet conection, which is wirless for LOML and MY self on the Desktop computers and the Netbook running under Xp.

All I get using the USB adaptor is a arrow going in cirlcles and the the message Requesting Network address fron 2wireXXX network. and the it goes to the Box that says Wireless Network ATuthentication Required which I enter the Key and click on connect and go right to the same geme.On the box is shows Wireless Secrity Wep 40/128-bit key and wep index 1(default) and Authentication open system. There are other options that I have tried and nothing works. I have poked around and it does show it is using a driver for the built in wireless system so I have no clue as what I should do to get it to work with out the USB wireless adaptor. I was wondering if I should dig out the old Linksys wireless router and use that in front of the AT&T box? If I don't use the wireless network adaptor I get nothing. I would like to use Ubuntu but if I can't watch NASCAR and get on the Internet using Ubuntu wirelessly, might as well keep XP because it will be the same with the Desktop computer. Any help would be appriciated.

To confirm that Linux is seeing your USB wireless the command is:

lsusb

This will list all your attached USB devices and print something about the wireless.
You can also try
code]
ifconfig
[/code]

to list the ethernet adapters you have and the wireless may be obvious. Sometimes it isn't, on my wife's laptop hers are listed as eth0 and eth1.

If that doesn't work, take the something from the lsusb command and try:

lsmod | grep 'something'

That will tell you what module is being loaded for the USB adapter and from there you can google to see if there is an updated driver available. After that, you might try an alternative wireless manager like Wicd.

No answers in particular since I'm just getting back into mucking with Linux in my spare time... but I have been using Ubuntu for what little I have been doing (trying to get a home file server going), and I have that same printer (absolutely *love* it in Windows and Mac OS X so far). Been thinking about getting the step son a netbook for his birthday coming up, so I'm *very* interested in how this works out!

I have decided to shelve the Ubuntu project for a while. I feel that I may have a corupted copy of Ubuntu as it doesn't recognize some of the commands David has given me and also on the trouble shooting guide for Ubuntu. I am not geeky enough for this also may be a reason and the biggest reason LOML has some Honey Do projects she want done ASAP and I have spent to much time on this. I have found that ASUS has a Linux version of this Netbook so may be the BIOS on mine is not compatible. I have gotten frustrated also so I will put it away for a few weeka and ponder my next attempt I might send for the CD/DVD copy of it and try it that way as it is a long download and may have gotten corupted during the process.

Observation of the ASUS Eeepc 1000HDXP. 10" screen. 120gb partitioned hard drive, 2gb memory, 3 USB ports and VGA port for an external monitor. SD card slot, LAN port, speaker and mic jack. It does not have a floppy drive or CD/DVD drive. Does not have numeric key pad, some keys have dual funcitons accessed by the Fn key. The right Shift key is in a bad place and you hit the Enter key when going for the Right Shift key. My biggest problem is I have Carpel Tunnel and the smaller key boad is hard to use. The touch pad is hard on my finger also. I have bought a USB wireless mouse, and numeric key pad. I also bought a USB CD/DVD burner/player to use when needed. I like it and use it when I travel. I used it for 2 weeks in January while in Idaho taking care of the Grand kids and was able to pay my the bills the first of the month online with no problem, thanks to the USB numeric key pad. LOML watched a move on it while on a flight to Seattle and wants one for herself. For occasional use it is fine but it does't replace a big Laptop or Desk top computer but for what I use it for it is fine. at home I connect to the 20" Monitor on my desk.

It comes with XP and Microsoft Works installed along with some other softwared so it is ready to go when you turn it one. The battery lasts about 3 hours and you can get a 7 hour battery from ASUS or other vendors on line. It has a AC adaptor/charger also. The onboard wireless work fine execpt with Linux which I will get to work later. I will be sending ASUS a email requesting help with this issure as the have a support website and Forums for this machine, just don't have time right now.

Time to go move my 55 gallon aquarium and my large display case with all my racing memorailia which will be a 2 day job and then to painting the kitchen and Sunroom before Easter.
