    I'm drinking jet fuel.

My father just shared a cough remedy and I thought I'd give it a try. I mixed a tablespoon of honey and about an ounce or so of overproof rum into a cup of tea, and it's actually quite nice.

The rum, which I often refer to as "jet fuel," is one that I picked up in Grenada a while back from the River Antoine distillery. They say that if its founders came back today (from the 1700's), they'd still feel right at home. It's all powered by people, animals, or water. Even the label is hand drawn.

It is unmistakably a rum, and a strong one, too. (It tastes like I've been dipping sugarcane!) It was always very difficult to drink this stuff straight, but I have to say it goes quite well with herbal tea and honey.

Hey, not a single cough this whole post! (hic!)

Any other cough remedies that might be equally fun to try?

I've always found that NyQuil gets me there... It's the achy, sneezy, stuffed-up, why-did-I-wake-up-on-my-kitchen-floor medicine...

There is a reason that all their TV commercials show the people taking this medicine in bed... Because you're not taking another step, that's why...

For people with a "chronic cough of unknown origin" (i.e. when Docs are unable to find a "cause")... then high-cocoa content chocolate (like 80% or higher -- like in European chocolate -- the REAL stuff) seems to do the trick.

I suppose you could have a glass of Rum beforehand to make it a bit more fun.

Shot of whiskey, teaspoon white vinagar, honey to sweeten, lemon to taste, mix up in a mug of boiling water. Drink while hot.

        Fixes me up every time.

similar to what my parents taught me. Whiskey, hot water, tea, honey a little sugar and some lemon.
          works wonders.

I used the whiskey cures the cough excuse all through college. Seems like I was sick all the time, especially Thursday and the weekend.

That horrible tasting stuff does not do a thing for me. I always take it as directed (saying yuck as I do it) and I invariably wake up in 2 hours feeling just as rotten as before I took it. Not sure why the stuff has almost no effect on me. Tylenol PM and any other cough medicine work just fine though.

Bernie, ya took the words right out of my mouth! Couple shots of good Kentucky bourbon and I don't care if I have a cough or not. I sleep better, too.

+1. Dark chocolate contains theobromine, which is a substantially more effective cough suppressant than codeine. There are no other ways to get theobromine that I know of (unless you are a doctor with a relationship with a drug company). Not good to get all those empty calories. And you have to get the darkest chocolate you can find. But it will kill a cough, and has no side effects (well, besides the added pounds if you can't get isolated theobromine).

I'll have to remember the chocolate trick. Yet another good reason to eat good chocolate.

I take loratidine/pseudoephedrine (Claritin-D) to relieve the congestion and open up the airways, then I drink a small glass of brandy before bedtime. And drink chamomile tea and honey frequently throughout the day.

For a major cough due to a cold or bronchitis, I prescribe Tessalon during the day and Hycodan (narcotic cough suppressant) at night.

I think a jet engine actually will run on rum (or any other strong liquor). Perhaps not very efficiently, but it will run.

Rum won't work in a piston engine so I'm stuck with avgas, but avgas is cheaper, too.

I'll go try it now. I just noticed an article in the last Parade magazine (the one that comes in the Sunday paper) that I think talks about the health benefits of vinegar. I suppose I'll have to read it while I'm drinking it!

I just used mucinex and it works great for cold symptoms/congestion. I drink Irish "punch" (hot black tea, sugar, milk and whiskey, quite often sans tea, sugar, and milk) when I am sick. Then again I also drink it when I am in good health!

just FYI, I have drank both jet fuel and rum, even the worst rum still tastes much better! jet fuel does taste better than gasoline though.

a jet engine will run on anything that will burn and stay burning, they like drinking the cheap stuff best.
