In this time of economic strife, when my company requested that I attend a four hour crane operation and safety session I had no trouble agreeing. It just covers the smaller cranes found in industrial buildings but another card in my wallet is always good.

I know what you mean. When I worked in the steel mill, when things got slow, I learned how to run a large overhead crane. That came in handy when our hours got cut. I always say it never hurts to learn something new. Someone can steal your money, your car, and maybe even your wife. But they can't steal what you know.

I got a little irritated at a co-worker a couple of years ago. He was listening to me discuss the procedure for making something that involved welding and plumbing. He said, well if our work loses some of its funding, at least you can do another line of work. I enjoy the work that I am doing now.
However, It DOES help to have abilities, certified training/certification in other lines of work.Hank Lee

I took on a new job in addition to my normal role about 8 months ago.It involves nondestructive testing and video imaging.I jumped on it when offered the chance, for the reasons you all listed.I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.Comment

I'm scheduled for a power flow simulation course next week. Although I'm in IT, it never hurts to get more training on the ol' record.
Besides, it ought to be fun trying to control power flow over 93,000 miles of transmission lines. Can anybody say blackout?Bob
