Anyone know how to set which monitor a window will open up in?

I believe they always open in the main monitor. When I was still running a triple-headed system though I noticed that after a while some applications would open in the last one they were closed in."A fine beer may be judged with just one sip, but it is better to be thoroughly sure" -
I've never seen a setting to dedicate certain windows to certain monitors, but I haven't seen everything
. Usually the software will only allow you to set the primary monitor and stuff like extended desktop.

Agree with Jon. Years ago when I ran two monitors (on a Mac) I could set which one would be the default and which one would be the side monitor. The settings for which was in the display preferences. Where programs opened were determined by where the window for that program was dragged to and last closed. It still works that way but I haven't run dual monitors in about 6 or 7 years.Last edited by leehljp; 03-01-2009, 06:46 PM.Hank Lee

We have several two monitor and some 4 monitor cards on out Computer dispatch terminals. It seems to depend on the make and model of card. Usually the default monitor is assigned in the board's bios. After windows loads the driver, the software will have options. Some software will let you assign programs. It seems the general rule is whatever screen the program was closed on is the one it will open up on the next time. However, nothing is etched in stone when it comes to pop-ups. They sometimes open in the default monitor even though the app is in the secondary.

Be careful about moving applications back to the main desktop if you take a monitor away. My laptop has a dual monitor setup at work but not at home. I have one app that if I close it while it is on the second monitor, at home it insists on opening on that same monitor that no longer exists. I have to reboot to fix it.David

I have similar issue when I remote into work. Many apps are on monitors 2 & 3, and it can be tricky to get them into view -- especially when one of the off-screen apps has a modal dialog open. Maybe this will work for you, too:
What I do is right-click the app in the task bar, click move, then hit one of the arrow keys. At that point the app window usually snaps to my cursor location and I can move it to where I want it.
If it doesn't snap into place, it usually means the app has a modal dialog open -- Outlook does this a lot. So far I've been able to close most modal dialogs by minimizing the app (from the task bar), then restoring it, then hitting Enter (to dismiss the off-screen modal with the default button). I've had that problem before too. With Windows I finally found a solution. There's a freeware (donations) program called The Wonderful Icon that's made a world of difference. You can pre-set it with commands to have the active window resize to whatever pre-sets you want. I have one wide screen and one regualr screen for my docking station at the office so I set one key combination that goes to full hight, left half, full hight right half and full size second monitor. You set it by pixel location, so 0,0 is always the left (usually main) monitor top left. Brings any window to the right place.
