i hope the things get better soon.....

just came out of a meeting with unsure feelings. i work for a precaster and i work in the engineering/drafting department of 10 people and 2 just got layed off. they are talking about shorter working weeks and/or more lay offs if we dont get any more projects coming through in the next 1.5 months.........

i feel real bad for those who have already lost their jobs and are hurting and are having to cut the things that they enjoy or help them take their minds off of stressful issues.

its got to bemuch more harder for those whose work visas are attached to their jobs and they are going to have to wrap up and leave, in a ridculously short period of time or loose it all.

another reason why people need to be more involved with politics and the issues at hand, because the people in office are going to find ways to screw up! oops, sorry, rant off

I hear ya. The sad thing I see us saying, "It is going to get worse before it gets any better" for another year or two. Just yesterday we had a company meeting and they are reducing wages and salaries across the board by 10% with the possibility of more to come.

I don't know which is the right road to travel, concerning the economy. We can only hope somebody gets it right. It seems it's a gamble, whichever way we go.

I hear you. Some weeks I work 32 hours and when I'm lucky, I work 40. At least we only have one guy on lay off from our shop.

The only good thing about being self-employed is that I can't fire myself. It's possible that the government stimulus package will target roads and public works/infrastructure projects that are long overdue. Hopefully, your company can share in some of that good fortune, although it sure isn't gonna happen overnight.

Sorry to hear that. I know that same feeling.

I've had a few of those meetings already. Our first one was back in Oct. when we went to a 4 day work week. We went back to 5 days last month because there wasn't enough billable time to cover everything with just 4 days. The catch was that we got a 20% or more cut in pay. The other hard part is that there isn't enough jobs going on to cover 5 days of work. We've got enough cash reserves to last another 3 months. Doesn't look good...

I took a job last September in the IT department of the largest water company in the US. We have locations in 32 states. The place is a madhouse, but seeing as how the economy is, I will stick it out til things get better. It may not be the ideal job, but it is a job, its steady, and we are actually hiring.

BTW - if any of you are Linux pros and live near Harrisburg or Hershey PA, and you are looking for a job, send me your resume.

My last company let me go in a cost cutting move at the beginning of last summer. I was one of the lucky ones who caught on somewhere else.

For those in a bad situation now, best of luck to you. Don't give up.

these werent the first one either. our yard is down to like 10% of what we use to have working. they layed off a few drafters back in nov 08. we are producing so little that its unbelievable.

the infrastructure stimulus that the govt is talking about isnt really going to impact us unless we too get into that business. we primarily do parking structures and commercail buildings.

i just wish the govt would get their act togather on the immigration thing and get rid of their 5 yr or so back log for people who have applied for permanent residency based work sponsorship. otherwise its going to be canada again, back to freezing my rear!

That's what I was hinting at. Smart companies get versatile, and follow the money...
