Impact Hardening

I was just reading about impact hardened Japanese saw blades and remembered where I first heard the term.

It was a few years ago when I worked for the BC government and a business applied for some Provincial Crown land in the mountains SE of Chilliwack. They needed a site close to transportation but away from habitation because they hardened railway track components, like switch frogs, by setting off explosions on them.

I like to imagine the business owner going through US Customs:
"And what do you do for a living, sir?"
"I blow up railway tracks." ...............!

So that's why I'm so hard headed!! I can blame my parents, teachers, & coaches for whacking me upside the head so often.

I can picture that conversation.

The last time I crossed into Canada (from Alaska), I was flying a light airplane. Called CANPASS, who gave me a reference number and wished me a good evening.

I have a couple katanas made from Chinese railroad steel. I had heard that it was hardened with explosives, as well.
