I agree. Our dog food used to be sold in 25 lb. bags (That's Indiana lingo ). Now I think it's something like 18.6 lbs. Coffee is another one that's been reduced for some time. We used to buy 3 lb. cans. Now they're 39 oz. One of the most recent changes I've noticed is 5 lb. of sugar. Now it's 4 lb.

Coke is doing this also. A local store had Coke on sale for a decent price. I found out when I got to the store it was a case of 20 cans not 24.

I have noticed this with other food items also. Maybe they will start promoting the smaller sizes are to help us lose weight.

What really ticks me off is when they reduce the size of the packaging and the store does not change the unit cost per oz. Not only does the manufacturer use slick marketing, but the grocery store contributes to that effort. I think this is one of the most deceiving practices and is very confusing when you try to do comparison shopping.

Seems like this tends to happen more with the name brand stuff rather than the off-brand and store-brand stuff. Eventually, of course, the off-brands switch to the "new" size but the name brands are always the leaders in giving you less product for the same price. To me it's just a price increase and I don't get too upset about the sleight of hand their doing to try to disguise it.

We almost always buy the off-brand stuff just on general principle. I got upset at both Coke and Pepsi one year sometime in the 90's by some idiotic marketing campaigns. Pepsi came out with "freshness dates" and hyped a multi-million dollar marketing campaign about how much better Pepsi would taste when it was "fresh". In the same year Coke came out with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign for the shape of their plastic bottle. It slightly resembled the old glass bottles. The bottle wasn't cheaper or better and the product inside it didn't taste better, it was just a different shape and Coke spent millions on advertising the fact. Since they I refuse to contribute an extra 10 to 20% in product price just to support some Madison Avenue marketing company that comes up with this kind of schlock.

As if the product sizes are not annoying enough (a 16oz can is now 14.5 or some thing)
I see other junk like VALUE packs that cost more then the individual products.
Campbell's soups is the worst for this one..

2 for $5 sale.. Buy 1 pay full price! (not every store does this so you have to remember who is doing to burn you on it..)

Stupid club cards.. I have more club cards in my wallet than credit cards and ID put together. They they started it was sold as "No more coupons, Just carry the card.
Then Albertsons started the card+coupon sale garbage.
Now I hear Safeway is doing it too.

One other thing those club cards do is make sure you don't skirt around the 1 item pr customer sales..

I didn't turn in the registration for for any of my store cards but I'm sure they already linked the debt card data to the card anyway.

                OK I'm done..

I wonder how long till the 8oz can becomes the standard for soda.

I wish this were true all around.

LOML used to be a size 6, if I recall correctly. Now she's a ... okay, some higher number... and I am still looking for the correct customer rep to complain to !

and for a switch. In the store the other day a 24 pack of Dr Pepper was only a $1 more than the 12 pack, yet there were people grabbing 2 12 packs. And the large jar of peanut butter (Jiff) cost more per unit than the small one. At least a gallon of gas is still a gallon. Soon that may be metric and make our brains explode trying to figure mileage.

What baffles my mind is how you can buy a 2 liter for LESS than the price of a 20 oz!!

That's why I buy soda in bulk when there's holiday sale. This weekend a local store had a special on 24 pack of any soda for $2.50 and these normally sell for $6.00 or more so I ended up buying 30 of them which should last us til' July when they have another sale like this.

I used to think that eventually pre-made / pre-cooked / prepackaged food would be what the majority of people would eat because of the cost/time factor. Now, I can see a retirement garden and canning/freezing for the future with costs going the way they are.

To me, it is not the "cost of operations" so much as the "profits for now" mentality.

With the way things cost, you might just have to get a gun and stand guard over your garden.

For over a decade I've said the same thing. So I buy 2 liter bottles of soda to refill my 20 oz bottle. I actually got my wife doing this too. I bet we've saved thousands by now doing that.
