Well, I finally got around to trying Ubuntu. I downloaded 8.10 and used the live CD. I didn't use it much, but I liked it. I really liked it. Don't tell Bill, he might ask for my MCSE card back.

It's a small thing, but the OS wasn't fully loaded, but there already was a popup "Now connected to the Wired Network". Wow, I am normally greeted by a "Found New Hardware..." box and multiple successive windows to install drivers.

I'm not ready to trash my current Vista (insert joke here, but it works for me...) main PC yet, but I have a couple that I can install this on for a full test drive.

I sure hope this isn't just a gateway OS that will lead me on a dark path to harder OS's like MAC's

There are a lot of people who are happy with MS, until they get viruses. I have a couple, who seem to have listened to me, and when they get something questionable they want to check out (possible virus email, etc), they boot into one of the live discs to check it out. This way they get the best of both worlds for their needs.

The only reason for Windows for me, is one game. It isn't on a console, but I seriously debated about that if I continue gaming (haven't had time much in the last couple years).

Many years ago I toyed around with Slackware and SUSE, but didn't think it was easy enough for my family to switch. I also use Quicken, and couldn't find a good Linux alternative at the time. Now I see there are a few, and MoneyDance looks like a very good choice.
So I also downloaded the live CD, loaded it, and like it. A lot. And so does my family. I just booted the PC from the CD, they were sad a couple of days later when I rebooted into Windows again. Now they're asking when I'm making the switch permanent.

Thanks to all you you who convinced me that it's time to try again.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop at work and next month will move my laptop from Windows to Ubuntu. I am trying to get my Dad to convert and he just might after this weekend. He is currently trying to recover his main XP desktop after a virus that infected his system despite having antivirus SW running.
