    For Want Of A Nail...

    the shoe was almost lost.

I opened my laptop this morning to discover that the seven key had fallen off the keyboard. My laptop was closed and in my bag overnight. The key post is still there and if I press it just right I can type an actual 7, which is a good thing because that number was in one of my more important passwords. I've already changed the password so I think I am good till Monday when I get the new keyboard.

Why not make a new one out of some scrap wood.
That would be a unique key among them all.
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

          Here you go:
          7
          77
          777
          7777
          777777
          77777777777777777

and cut and paste. Now as long as ctrl and P and C are still around!

Seems harder and harder to find a good keyboard these days (so much online only).

            Here you go.

            http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/keyboards.html

I heard a story about these guys on NPR a couple weeks ago. Apparently they bought the molds/rights to the IBM (later Lexmark) keyboard technology. They actually employ honest to god American workers that build something so you can feel good about doing your part for the economy...

I still have a beloved model M IBM keyboard with like a 10-12 cord and no bleeping windows key to accidentally dump you out of your favorite game (though they do have windows key models too). I actually don't care about the clickity noise which lots of folks see as the big attraction. For me it's the tactile feel, key travel, solid stops and fast springs are soooo much more satisfing than the mushy junk import keyboard.

This is my work laptop and I've already ordered the replacement. Now that I got the one password changed, it is not that big a deal, except it was very odd that it fell off while the laptop was closed and in my bag.
