Well I Made It to Pittsburg, Barely

Flew from RDU to Atlanta last night and after having the gate for the Pittsburgh flight changed 2 times made one more mad dash after it was changed a 3rd time and.... the flight was delayed. So after leaving 45 minutes late we are on approach in Pittsburgh. Right about the time I am thinking it is a really long approach, the plane starts going back up. I crack a joke about the pilot saying 'Hey this isn't Pittsburgh!' and the captian comes on and says due to 60 knot winds, no landing.

We will circle and wait for them to die down. After 25 minutes of turbulence we get diverted to Cleveland. We land in Cleveland, captain says weather is not supposed to clear until 6am so we will probably stay in Cleveland. 1 hr later we are still on the plane and captain says the weather has cleared and we can land in Pittsburgh after all. 1/2 hr after refueling, etc is done we take off - this is 2AM and the copilot announces that we are first in line. Like there are any other flights leaving at 2AM, in the rain? Finally touched down in Pittsburgh at 2:30ish this morning.

A 92 mph wind gust was reported at Pittsburgh Intl. Airport last night. This may have had something to do with your delay in Cleveland.

I have seen conditions similar to this from the front office of an airplane:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd2AoYtTcFg

If the video won't convince you that the captain made a wise choice by diverting, I can explain further from personal experience

Of course, if hearing about an amateur's follies won't convince you, at least one of our members (TCAS) is a professional pilot and could provide his perspective.

The good news is that you landed safely. No telling what the outcome would have been if you just went on.

I was watching the news this AM and they reported lots of power outages due to this. The cabbie who took me to the workplace from the hotel said there was a tornado somewhere near here.

Yeah, but you have to give him credit, he ALMOST pulled it off.

If it were a UPS/FedEx plane rather than a passenger flight, I'm convinced they would have gone through with it. You'd be amazed at what I see those guys do. I'm surprised the wings don't fall off the way some of those clowns slam their planes down.

Some viewers think that Airbus had a wing strike. I've also heard that flight landed on the second attempt. However, it might have been just a little more excitement than the folks in the back were willing to pay for

There are also many YouTube videos of flight testing with big crosswinds that show you how tough the airplanes are.

Maybe its because I'm getting older, but I just do not need to fly or drive in really horrible weather any more. Life's short enough as it is.

Yeah, you were probably better off visiting beautiful downtown Cleveland for a few hours. Like DrumPriest said, it got a little breezy here for a while -- in fact, I found a coupla WVa guys in my back yard this morning!!

Welcome to The Steel City Crokett. Yea, it was a bit breezy here last night. We usually don't have wind like that just rain or snow. Enjoy your stay and I hope you get to see some of the city during your visit.

Correction: The 92 mph wind gust was recorded at the Allegheny County Airport, not Pgh. Intl. Airport. Nevertheless, glad you made it safely.

Reminds me of a trip to Albuquerque from Carlsbad, NM on a little 13 seat Frontier commuter airplane. The weather was OK leaving Carlsbad but deteriorated quickly with high winds in Albuquerque. The pilot did a masterful job of landing that little airplane safely in 50 mph crosswinds.
