    Fine Woodworking Archive Collection

Last weekend, I ordered the Fine Woodworking Archive Collection, and it came in the mail yesterday. I was a little hesitant to pay the $150 for it, but finally decided to go for it, and I do think it is worth it. The full text of all 201 issues included is searchable. The entire magazines are reproduced (complete with the ads). The only things I would like to see but haven't seen is a master table of contents, and a way to browse teh covers at larger than thumbnail size.

As a warning to anyone that gets the collection, it does install all issues to your hard drive, so it takes up a good bit of space. I don't think that the issues are viewable directly on the DVD. But, they appear to be normal pdf files once installed, although they have a custom viewer program.

The issues are in order on the DVD in PDF format in the data/issues folder (I think). About 3.2 gig of them. This is one that would do well as a portable application.

It's great to be able to read about something and when there is a reference to a previous issue you can just go to that issue and see for your self. You can also just print out a page if you want a copy. You are right though, the price is steep and I would not have spent that much for it myself, but as a gift it was great! The only real problem with it is I do not have a way to read the issues in my reading room. No computer there as I think the steam from the shower would destroy it.

According to them, the images can be directly viewed, by non supported os's like my Linux machines.

Good to know. Means that I should be able to put the DVD in a machine and view without installing everything. I didn't check it, but just installed onto my machine.

As I've been browsing/searching some more, I'm finding many nice things in the collection. But then, with proabaly around 20,000 pages, there has to be something good.
