I saw where the USPS may stop Saturday delivery. Are they going to actually go through with this?

Locally, while the customers, and the postal carriers are shooting for Saturday (two day weekend), the post office, is shooting for being closed on Tuesday.She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice. -
No real evidence of it happening, yet, but this is what they are proposing. I am hoping against it.
Our work week starts on Saturday and we have rotating days off. Every six weeks we have Friday, Saturday, Sunday off. If this happens, we would get Sunday and Tuesday off every week. The only up side would be that Monday holidays would mean a 3 day weekend. Mail volume on the Wednesday after is going to be staggering and the business community is going to be upset.
Additionally, routes are broken into 5 route groups with a T-6 'Floater' asssigned to each group. The new schedule would eliminate the need for those positions. No idea how many Floaters there are nation wide, but there are 11 in the station I work in. Not exactly in line with the President's idea of getting people back to work!Don, aka Pappy,

The PM said he would like it to be Tuesday, because that is the lightest day of the week.
However, the higher ups at the PO constantly have meetings with businesses, both large and small. I don't think these businessmen will allow the PO to do Tuesdays. Up until now at least, businesses have been the tail that wags the dog. The last thing the PO can afford to do is alienate businesses, which account for a very large percentage of their most profitable services.You don't need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice.Comment

The junk mailers will need to have their say and may delay the inevitable a few years. But long term I don't see where the ongoing need, and dollars are going to come from to allow the post office to keep making full circuit house calls.
The legitimate businesses all want to stop sending paper mail regardless. Every one of my utilities, investments, bank, and mortgage all want me to rely on the on-line statements. I pay all of them online but to date still have them send a paper bill. Do I care if it shows up on Tues. or Wed? Nope. Am at at the point were I'd be okay just receiving a PDF instead, yeah just about... I love Netflix, but they already deliver tons of content online, if the post office stopped delivering I have to imagine they'd be able to roll over to all streamed content (yep, rough for people on dial-up still, though wider broadbandification has been a theme for the new PotUS.
Medium-Long term I have to believe the handwriting is on the wall for the USPS. When we hit the point that the only thing a majority of people are receiving in their mailbox is the junkmail the jig is up.
There will always be a some folks who don't want to/can't go online. But, when that is a smaller and smaller group and the junk mailers are seeing lower ROI on their hard-copy junkmail it seems like the model breaks down.Comment

Pappy, how would you feel if they were proposing Saturday instead of Tuesday? I guess it still doesn't fix the workforce reduction. Whether they pick Saturday or Tuesday, those 11 guys/gals would still get the axe?
I'd leave it up to the carriers. If they want the weekend off, fine. If they'd prefer what we have now and I have to pay a little more for first-class postage, then that is fine, too.Comment

There are a lot of older people still, with no online access (or tech skills), as well as those of us, who know how intermittent our isp connection can and is. (been trapped living elsewhere since before Christmas, so it is way down the list). I still prefer and use paper, BOTH ways.She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. I like the system we have now, but wouldn't mind having a normal (Mon-Fri) work week.
The T-6 carriers wouldn't necessarily lose their jobs. The route assignments are by seniority. Every 'floater', either by station or city, would have the right to bid any route with a junior carrier. The cycle would repeat until all carriers had been reassigned. Union would prevent any firings so force reduction would come through normal attrition. The only immediate savings would be in a reduction of overtime.
Your last statement is probably the bottom line. In the past these 'proposals' have been followed up by a request to increase the postage rates.Don, aka Pappy,
