    Forty Years Ago Today

Question: Anyone know -- without Googling it -- what happened 40 years ago today?

Hint: It has to do with music.

(Pause to allow time for thought.)

Answer: On January 30, 1969, The Beatles performed their infamous "rooftop concert" on top of the Apple Records building in London. It turned out to be their last-ever public performance. They played five songs before the police came and told them to pack up.

Four of our local musicians recreated the event during the lunch hour atop a downtown sandwich shop. Two guitar players, bass player, drummer (they didn't have a pseudo Billy Preston on keyboards, for some reason) played the same five songs the Fab Four played. Pretty cool. And no police.

Forty years ago already. Gosh, I feel old(er).

To make you feel even older, 1969 was still a few years before I was born. I'm not sure I even qualified for gleam status yet.

I was close. I saw the thread title and sang to myself "Sergeant Pepper taught his band to play"

I thought I was going to get this one having heard a story about an upcoming anniversary of a famous event with a musical tie-in earlier this week on MPR, but I was wrong.

That story was about next Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper...
