My Journey To the Darkside Is Now Complete

Well it's official. I am working from home today on my laptop with XP on it. I am wishing I were at the office so I could be on my Linux desktop and/or I had the spare Linux laptop here so I could be working from it. I am also grumbling because commands like ifconfig and ls aren't working in Windows. Things all just work faster in Linux. The spare laptop with half as much RAM as this one boots faster and loads apps faster. Transferring files to USB devices - mem cards, etc is almost 2X faster under Linux, according to my unofficial test results.

I don't think I can move my wife's laptop or the desktop at home to Linux just yet though. The printer we have isn't supported under Linux. However I've decided that if my in-laws do move here I am installing Linux on their laptop. Then my FIL won't be calling me every week because something isn't working.

Have you installed Cygwin yet? It'll make life on XP easier for you. We actually had one program that was supposed to be Vista compatible that wouldn't install through Vista but would when the executable was run under
    Cygwin. Very strange.

I'm slowly moving the other direction. We have mostly XP in the office but all our servers run Linux. I'm much more familiar with Windows than Linux, but definitely prefer the concepts, stability, and general lack of problems around Linux.

I will eventually put Cygwin on the desktop at home. I'd like to move that to Linux but probably can't for a while yet. The laptop will get moved to Linux after I take a business trip next month. Then I will be out from under the current crunch and can afford it to be down, at least for a bit.

        I wholeheartedly second Cygwin!

I was in a Unix environment for 10 years and now I live in an XP world at work. Don't know what I would do without my Cygwin.
