If you haven't read it, Chris Buckley's "Thank You For Smoking" still cracks me up, and is so far the only one of his books that I enjoy re-reading.

But I'll also take this opportunity to plug librivox.org - public domain books from Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org), read by volunteers. The resulting recordings are in the public domain, and can be downloaded and played e.g., on my Shuffle during my commute. Lots of interesting stuff in there, if you've got listening time vs. reading time.
Don't just say no to kickback.

If ya want somethin' ta tickle yer funnybone, and give you insight to travelling at the same time, anything by Bill Bryson. If you liked Jean Shepherd (or even know who he is! (The writer of A Christmas Story, among other things) you'll probably like Bill.
      Of particular note:

The Lost Continent (travels in small town America)
      In a Sunburned Country (Australia)
A Short History of Nearly Everything (the world!)
      Made in America (on language)
Notes From a Small Island (England)

Probably another 6-8 to choose from also.

While I do not care for all of Colleen Mccullough's work, her series of novels set in historic Rome is well worth the read. Popular enough so that most of the books in the series can be found in your local second hand book store.
The First Man in Rome is the first in the series.

            Try David Weber

I agree with Clive Cussler - first read Raise the Titanic (Great book, DREADFULL Movie).

I like Military Sci-Fi, and highly recommend anything by David Weber. When I get a new book from him it's very hard to put it down
