Ah, those things existed before the 19th century and "corsets", - in a sofa of sorts called a divan. Those go waaay back. The divan that I remember seeing as a kid and seeing in pictures/paintings drawings of years ago were a sofa like bed without a back and one end higher than the other, as described in the link.

Wikipedia has "divan" wrong, but then wikipedia is written by individuals with what ever is on their mind instead of true historical research. Wiki lists it with box springs. Sheesh! Those things predate box springs.

Thanks for the link Cabman but I forgot the smilies on my OP. I knew what it was. My grandmother had one and she also called it a fainting couch.

I must be older than you guys! My word "divan's" derivative is older than "fainting couch".

And I still use "going to the picture show", and it's in the "Ice Box" too!
