One of my wife's clients gave her an old laptop thinking my kids could use it for games or something. I booted it up tonight and knew it wouldn't be good when I saw the Windows 98 logo. Turns out it has a rockin' 64MB RAM and 2GB HDD, half of which is full with 98 and the crappy preload from the manufacturer. I did not bother checking the processor speed. I am going to tell my wife to donate it to somebody. I suppose you could check email on it, but it would be awful slow.

About a month ago we finally gave away a 386, and would you believe a Commodore 64 to clean out a closet. I was thinking maybe Ebay instead. LOML said just trash it.

I finally gave away my old TRS-80 dual-floppy and my Compaq 286 suitcase portable last year (the Compaq still worked, and the TRS might've, except boot disk long since turned to dust...). More than one person suggested I should have put them in a museum someplace...

If it wasn't a laptop, it might be a good machine to run a cnc machine with. They don't need much of anything except timing stability of the cpu.LeeComment

I got our desktop off of Craigslist. The woman who sold it to me didn't want me to come to her house for safety reasons. I didn't much care so met her in a public place, took the machine home and booted it. I basically found her entire life - pictures, facebook account, email, etc. There was even a quicken data file there that I did NOT open. I wiped the machine and installed Windows from scratch but it is funny what how people think of security. I'd have no problems with someone coming to my house but if I sold a used machine I'd either keep the HDDs or reformat them several times.David
