since they announced the closing? I am looking for an external HDD to do backups to and was wondering how good the prices were.

No, I haven't. But I know a lot of people at the one I used to work at, so I was thinking of dropping by.
Regardless, you might be surprised to find out how non-clearance-like the prices are. When CompUSA went out of business in MN, they had sold all of their merchandise to a liquidator, who set the prices. There was no negotiating, no deals, prices just as high as ever.
Sure, things may be different now, but it's not a given that they'll just be clearing things out En Masse... -
I saw a post on the AVS Forum (buried within an unrelated thread) that said exactly what BigguyZ wrote: the liquidators have moved in, and they ain't dealin'. But that may have been the situation at just the one store; I don't know whether the liquidation personnel at the individual stores have any discretion on prices.
The Linens 'N Things here recently shut down. By the time the "everything must go!" prices got to even 40-50% off, there was little left that was worth hauling home.LarryComment

My wife and I went to the one here in State College yesterday, the prices were not good at all. The only thing in the store at 30% off were the TV stands. The TV's were only 10% off and the prices were just as high as they were three weeks ago. So NO deals there as far as we were concerned. The liquidaters definately took over."The power of kindness is immense. It is nothing less, really, than the power to change the world."Comment

As mentioned in another post here, and experienced when I kept visiting CompUSA, when the liquidators move in, prices are discounted from the suggested retail prices (they raise them to lower them).
Before you go, look at http://www.salescircular.com/
Or www.pricewatch.com and http://www.resellerratings.com/She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

I had gone to a Circuit City that was being closed in the first round of closings weeks and weeks after they started liquidating it. I think at that time prices were finally down to around 60% - 80%. There may have been a few good deals, like on obscure or unpopular movies (provided you liked them). Things that would have had a wide audience like TVs, cameras, or USB cables were either sold out or a little better than what you could find at Best Buy for full price, but not as good as you could order for online (including shipping). If you are looking for an external hard drive, i wouldn't waste my time - they'll be sold out long before the price drops enough to be worth buying from there. If you wait until the last couple of days you might find some good deals on accessories for not too common items. I went the last day CompUSA was open and got a great deal on some ink/paper for a Canon dye sublimation printer and a camera battery for an old Canon camera.EricComment

Liquidators are paid a premium not to give the store away. They only want to give the impression that prices are low.Comment

When the CompUSA stores went out here they progressively lowered the prices the closer it came time to close up the shop. A girl where I work got a $500 12inch wide pro-photo ink jet printer for $100 new in the box it was the last one they had. I cannot remember if it was the Canon or the Epson. I was seething with jealousy.
Some how I just knew Circuit City's close out prices would suck. I never did like their stores anyway.Comment

I'd wait a week or 2.......or 4......
I just bought a 500Gb SimpleDrive external a few weeks ago off Amazon, and CC's "clearance" price was still 35% higher than I paid.
Obviously, they're not ready for MY type of shopping yet
The good news (at least at this store), they had STACKS of them, so maybe a few might survive until the discounts get a bit deeper.Ken W.

Dave,
Better off getting a deal on that external HDD somewhere else. I would not waste time going to CC because those liquidators actually have a higher price on the item than when CC was running the store. You'll notice sticker price on top of the old sticker price and all of the old price on the shelves have been taken out.
I just got a 250GB WD Passport for $30.00 @ Office Depot this weekend because they were clearing them out. Price at CC going out of business store was $79.99
Kind Regards,Chris
