    Highschool Tour

My youngest will be going to high school come september. Tonight we got to go for a tour to one of the local schools. Once we got to the wood shop I was happy to stay put until the open house was over but SWMBO and youngest was determined that I look over the other departments.

Ha! That's how I got the bug -- actually middle school shop class... and it stuck with me until I could afford a garage!

I guess be happy that it has a wood shop at all!

With the financial mess everyone seems to be in, let's hope this doesn't affect programs like this.

Woodshop is dieing for us at work. I think he is down to 3 class periods a day of shop and the rest are engineering classes. I give it another year and woodshop will be gone. They will keep the equipment for the engineering classes though.

They call ours, "Technology". They do some problem solving such as bending oaktag into a shape that will support a given weight. They did do a clock project, if you can call it a project. The teacher precut the hexagonals, the kids lined up to a pre-prepared silk screening frame and pulled the ink across the hexagon. After the ink dried they got to spray the project with canned 'finish' (she didn't know what it was) and install the movement. Oh yea, they were allowed to sand the wood before applying the dial. Now, that's inspiringfor a kid. My girls thought it was all pretty hoaky until I began to show them how to do simple things like hang a picture or drapery rod and do some home repairs themselves. Now, I'm a hero.
            Blessings,
            Chiz

If it wasn't for all the other classes you have to take I'm not sure I would have ever left the wood shop and auto shop buildings when I was in high school. As with all of the vocational trades, many don't see their value and think an extra computer class would be than old fashioned skills. I know that a few of my classmates only stayed in high school because of shop classes. I'll bet there are a lot more students that go into the trades after graduating than computer sciences and sports.

Ack.. our wood shop class is actual wood working projects. The engineering classes are interesting though. I installed a laser engraver for them last year. That have a modeler (which makes parts out of extruded plastic), computerized design, etc too.
