Drunk driving is taken much more seriously in Europe and Australia than it is here. Two examples.

In 2007, we took a trip along the Normandy coast in France, a place known for its love of wine. They had set up a sobriety checkpoint in the parking lot near one small resort town and I was tested for the first time ever that evening. Luckily we had decided I would be the designated driver.

In Australia, another place known for big drinking, the wife did the driving in a night out while the husband had perhaps two glasses of wine. They were very clear about deciding who would do what and in explaining why.

I'm all for very harsh DUI penalties. However like all such punishments, the problem is there's no end in sight to the number of jails we build and the inmates they hold. We end up with a system in which bad actors are cared for, sometimes with kid glove treatment, at taxpayer expense. I haven't found an answer to that one yet.

maybe technology will be the answer, your computer drives your car, you just tell it where to go... at that point, you could even start putting a wet bar in your car, and get sloshed on the way to where ever your going...

we can't outlaw liquor, been there, done that...

we can't incarcerate every boob who tries this...

and we can't summarily execute people for this flaming lapse in judgement...
It's Like I've always said, it's amazing what an agnostic can't do if he dosent know whether he believes in anything or not

        manslaughter or murder?

The DUI driver KNEW he/she should not drive, that then places intent in the facts. It doesn't matter whether it's a gun or car, the driver (DUI) KNEW not to drive. That person knew what COULD happen. So that is MURDER and I don't care what any bleeding hearts say. The DUI driver should get at least 25 years in prison for the first time when a life is lost.
