Sad news for John Travolta/Kelly Preston...

Just read with much sorrow that their 16-y.o. boy, Jett was found dead, apparently from a fall while ill, at the home they were vacationing in, in the Bahamas. I had occasion to meet the whole family while working on their home in Florida, and was so impressed by their warmth and down-home nature, as well as John and Kelly's genuine devotion to their kids. I cannot imagine what they are going through right now. No parent should have to endure this.

I saw that on the news tonight. It is indeed a sad day. Prayers will be offered for the family.

What a coincidence, I'm surprised I didn't meet you at his home while I was doing work there. Much closer to you. Jumbolair is quite a ride for me. My now deceased BIL lived in Spring Hill, and the ride was a good reason to visit. A very tragic death, Jett had a seizures from Kawasaki Syndrome (KS).

Really sad to hear that. A friend of mine works as a "production assistant" for movie companies ( a "gofor do whatever") and worked with Travolta on several of his films. Said he was a nice guy to work with, came up to her to introduce himself, was really nice to the "newbies."

I've followed his career since his "Kotter" days and always admired his skills. Great actor. My friend's comments just cemented my admiration.

          That is exceptionally sad.
I really hope that the child was receiving medical care. I'm sure some of the Floridians will remember that the Scientologist are against medical intervention and I really hope that this incident was not another one of those cases. The article mentioned that they were trying to rule out a fall in the bathtub as well.

Maybe you did... Although I was only there twice while under construction. Most of my involvement was in design phase, while John and Kelly were renting in Spruce Creek...

If I understand it correctly, Scientologists aren't against medical care, but only against "interventions" (as you aptly described it) where the natural course of one's life might be grossly altered by medical "last resorts".

KS was described to me as a disease that can manifest itself in all kinds of ways, everywhere from fingernail malformations or skin rashes, right up to seizures or heart attacks. A seizure resulting in a fall could have easily led to a fatal head injury.

I'm sure that whatever happened was not the result of any form of neglect. Those kids were well cared for.

Don't know for sure, Uncle C. I do remember a case of a Lisa McPherson that was surely not a case of them being against intervention by measures of "last resorts". Read up on her if you like, http://www.lisamcpherson.org/ it was a really sad case.

Sometimes it's not about the dogma, but about how individual people interpret it. I know Jett has never lacked for medical attention, and was for a long time on a commonly used seizure medication, until such time as it quit working for him, and the side effects were worrisome. And when he had his accident, he was taken to the hospital, not to the reading room. People can have beliefs without becoming fanatical or unrealistic about them. I doubt anything irrational happened here. I just feel so sorry for them, and hope that they can find comfort.
