Computer + Camera Help: How do you ....

how do you rename all of the files in a single directory without having to renaming them individually?

here is what i am doing. my parents were here visiting me and i took about 90 pics. then i emptied the files onto the computer and took another 80 while they were here. now i cant put the files in the same directory because they start numbering from dsc_0001. now i want all the files in the same directory, short me renaming each file individually, i cant have them in the same folder. how do i accomplish what i am trying to do?

i have a nikon D50. i hate the file naming system. i cant set it up (there is no option for it) so that it saves it as a date+number. does anyone know what i should do or can do to allow the camera to name files in this manner (date+file number)?

    thanks!

First, there are free programs that will rename in bulk. Do a Google and see what will work for you.

Second, If you use the import photo function of Vista or XP rather than just dumping the files from the camera you can specify a date and subject name scheme.

Third, Programs like Picasa will import pictures and sort them by date.

Forth, Look in the setup of the camera and see if you can set it to not reset the counter. That way you will not get dup numbered photos until after 999.

Fifth, That is what children are for. Give one of them the task of renaming to a name logical to the photo.

    good luck, Bill

If I'm reading your post right, this is what you can do.

Assuming that the first batch of pictures are in their own folder in the "MY PICTURES" file on your computer, open up the folder with the batch, click the "Edit" tab in the top tool bar, and slide down and click on " select all". This will highlight all the pictures in that folder. Then right click on the first picture in the folder and a box will open with a number of choices. Left click on "rename" and that picture will be ready to be renamed. Once renamed, click outside the box and all the pictures will be renamed( and numbered).

Or you could hold down the control key, and carefully left click on the pictures you wish to choose then right click to bring up the rename box again.

Hope this is of some help to you.

You make it sound like I know what I'm doing

I find it easier to use a hosting site like photobucket.

I'll see if I can shed some light on this. When you start a thread, or reply to a post, you will by typing in the box I am now typing in. When you are finished typing your message, do not hit "submit" yet. Scroll down to "Additional Options". You will see a box "Manage Attachments". Click on that box. You can now browse your computer to find the image you want to attach. Maximum file size for a .jpg is right around 95KB. Maximun file sizes are listed, so if you're attaching something other than a .jpg, find the appropriate maximum file size. Keep the file a little less than that, then upload.

After your file is uploaded, close that page. Now click wherever you want your pic to appear in the message you typed. Just above the box you typed your message, you'll see a paper clip. Click on it, then choose the file name you want to insert. Click on "Preview Post" to verify that you didn't make a mistake. If all is well, scroll down. You will again see the box you typed the message in. Now click on "Submit".

edit: Just tried it. Renaming them that way works like a charm. Thanks for the tip.

I use a free program call "Irfanview" to rename photos by the batch.

It will also allow you to resize and a lot of other stuff in batch mode.

                  Good luck!

the picasa program is amazing! thanks Bill for bringing it to my attention. infact, i like the picasa web service for hosting pics better than photobucket. it was just simpler to get around in it.

the only thing that i dont know how to do is to post a link in a post like we can using photobucket.

                      thanks!
