Any OpenOffice Users? What do you ....

are there any openoffice users here? what applications do you use (word processor, spread sheets, presentation application..)? what do you guys think of their software, in terms of output and what it does. are you capable of doing all the things that you would be able to do in MS Office? what version are you currently using?

i am trying to download it right now. i just got a used machine off of a friends hands and want a word processor, spread sheet and presentation program. i was looking for a free alternative to ms office.

I use it. In fact, I have entire organizations using it as an alternative to M$O.

The capabilities of either product far exceed what the average user will ever attempt.

I have the latest version. I check for updates routinely. I've been an OO user for maybe 2-3 years?

i cant seem to download the file from their site. it just keeps saying that their site is not responding.

i then found a 3.0 version that i downloaded. its 131MB file.
then another one that is 2.4.0, its a .iso file from their mirror site. its 619MB.

now do i just install the 3.0 and i can automatically update from the software or do i have to go somewhere to get the latest all the time?

I've got the latest version, and its used as a MS office replacement in my house. Works just as well, and does all the same stuff for free.

If I hadn't had the opportunty to get MSO for $29 through our employee purchase plan, I'd be using OO. Anyone who thinks "free" software can't hack it hasn't tried OO.

I have it on my machine but don't use it as much as I should. I keep it on the computer because the LOML is an officer in the quilt quild and gets reports via email from various other officers. Of course each of them is using a different version of MS word or some other word processer so, much of the time, the document won't open in word. OO will ALWAYS open it, then I can save it in any format I choose. It is well worth the time it took to download it on my 56K modem that was operating at 3K when I downloaded it. (Don't ask, it' a long story.)

I have used it in the past (word processoer and spreadsheet pirmarily) in the past. I really do like it. It got used for printing envelopes in a mail merge a few years ago when MS Word wouldn't let us do what we wanted (could only get the stupid wizard to work for mail merge, and it wouldn't work right). It might not be as fancy, but that also means that it doesn't try to do as much for you automatically that you hate, like recent versions of word seem to for me.

I now am using Star Office which uses the same core code as Openoffice.org, but has other additions by sun. I think that it is still available for free on Windows by downloading the Google pack.
